How To Refinish Wood Chairs: Steps To Refinish Wooden Chair Furniture

How To Refinish Wooden Furniture/Chairs?

The process of refinishing wooden chairs is mentioned below:
  1. Cleaning:
The First step in the process will be cleaning of a wooden chair. In the cleaning process, the user needs to squirt 2 tablespoons of dish liquid or a trisodium phosphate in a small bucket containing warm water. He needs to dip the sponge in a mixture and wring out the sponge until the sponge gets barely damp. After that, the user needs to wipe out the chair with the sponge and remove oils, dirt, and dust from any decorative trim or corners.
  2. Dry The Wooden Chair:
The next step in the process is to dry the chair using a clean towel. It is also recommended to use shop cloth, an old t-shirt, linen towel, or any other cloth that will not leave lint behind after drying.
  3. Sanding:
The third step will be to sand the scratches & small nicks on the wooden chair using medium grit sandpaper. The deep scratches need to be filled with wood filler using a craft stick. Once the wood filler will be dry, smooth it up with sandpaper and apply a primer on it so that its stain matches with the whole chair.
  4. Apply Wax Based Stripper:
Once the chair will be completely dry, the user needs to brush a wax-based stripper on to the wooden surface which he wants to refurbish. It is recommended to use a natural bristled brush because chemicals used in strippers can dissolve synthetic bristles. After applying the stripper, the user needs to wait as recommended on the label.
  5. Scrape The Wooden Chair:
The next step will be to scrape the old finish and wax stripper from the wooden chair using a plastic scraper. The user can apply a second coat of stripper if the first coat has not removed the old finish completely.
  6. Again Sand The Chair:
It is recommended to use 180-grit sandpaper on the wooden chair in order to remove the last bit of old finish & stripper. Sanding will also open the grain that will take the paint or stain more evenly. After sanding, wipe the dust out of a wooden chair using the tack cloth.
  7. Apply Stain:
The next step will be to apply a stain on the wooden chair using barely dampened staining sponge. It is recommended to use staining sponge as it gives the user more control than the brushes do. The stain needs to be rubbed on to the wooden chair on the direction of its grain rather than across it. Once done, let the stain dry up completely.
  8. Light Sanding:
The next step will be to lightly sand the chair in order to give it a smooth finish before applying a second coat of stain on it. The sandpaper recommended is 220-grit.
  9. Seal The Wooden Chair:
The last step in the process will be to seal the refinished chair using a coat of spray or brush the sealer directly on to the chair. The chair can be put to use once the sealer applied on to it is completely dried up.
