Building an upholstered headboard is an easy project which gives style and a touch of elegance to the bedroom with the choice of fabrics and will make the bed potentially more comfortable. The ultimate & best way to make an upholstered headboard is mentioned below:
  1. Purchase Plywood: The first step is to purchase the plywood for the headboard. The user can make a headboard out of anything, and in any size according to their need. However, the upholstered headboard will be covered with fabric than simple plywood should be fine, there is no need for any expensive hardwoods.
  2. Cut The Length: The second step is to cut down the length of the plywood to fit the width of the bed. The Beds vary in width ranging full to the king, so it is advisable to measure the bed to size down the headboard properly. For best results use a circular saw.
  3. Mark A Pattern: Once the plywood is cut than the next step is to make a pattern for the buttons that are going to be attached on the board. The user can use 2 or 3, or a dozen as well, it depends on the pattern. However, for the best look, it is advisable to place them evenly and symmetrically on the headboard.
  4. Drill Holes: After the button marking is done then drill the holes at the button marked spots. The holes should not be very thick, it should be large enough so that the threaded needle can pass through several times.
  5. Purchase: Its time to make a purchase of the fabric, batting and of the large buttons at any fabric or craft store. The user should make sure to buy enough fabric than needed. It's advisable to choose a fabric that will stand up to wear and tear.
  6. Cover The Headboard: Its time to place the batting on the headboard and cover with the desired number of layers. Over the edge on each side of the board, the batting should extend about 1 foot. In order to create a soft headboard, the user will need at least 3 layers of batting. Adding more than 3 layers creates extra softness and will give a more pronounced look.
  7. Trim The Edges: On the backside of the headboard trim down the edges of the batting to 4 inches. After that staple the batting with a staple gun to the backside of the plywood.
  8. Drape: Over the headboard drape down the chosen fabric. Carefully tuck the edges under, and flip the headboard so that the back faces up.
  9. Pull: After draping the fabric, pull it tight and at the same time staple the fabric to the plywood. The fabric should be draped in a way that it will cover the batting on the back completely. Once the fabric is secured, then trim away the excess fabric with the help of scissors.
  10. Button: In order to attach the buttons simply thread a needle heavy thread and then push it through the first hole and out from the batting and fabric starting from the back to the front. Run the needle from a large button.
  11. Attach The Button: The user can do this with either 1 or 2 drilled holes, depending on the choice. The user needs to make sure that to pull the button tight for creating the tufted look in the batting. Repeat the attaching process with each of the holes that have been drilled until the headboard is tufted in the desired look.
  12. Secure: Atlast the user needs to fix the headboard to the wall behind the bed. For that use a headboard hanger, which are available at any home improvement stores. Headboard hanger are 2 pieces of metal, one that will be attached to the headboard and the other to attach to the wall.
