2 Easy Methods And Items Needed To Make An Padded Headboard With Buttons

In order to make a padded headboard with buttons, first collect some items required for the process and then go through the methods mentioned below:

Things You Will Need

  • Plywood
  • Circular Or Hand Saw
  • Drill
  • Batting
  • Scissors
  • Staple Gun
  • Fabric For Headboard
  • Needle And Thick Thread
  • Buttons
  • Finishing Nails

Method 1: Make A Wood Headboard

Here are the steps to make your wooden headboard:
  • In order to make your padded headboard, you need a plywood that is 3/4 (1.9cm) thick & four feet (1.2m) wide. You can also make the padded headboard out of almost anything & in any size. Do not purchase any expensive hardwood because the wood will soon be covered with fabric.
  • Now, cut plywood length in order to fit the width of your bed, bed's area vary in width from full to king size, simply measure the bed so you can easily size the headboard accordingly. You need a circular saw to get the best results.
  • Now you need to make the pattern for the buttons on your board. You can also use 2-3, or a dozen, depends on the pattern you want. In order to get the best look place your buttons ecenly & symmetrically on your head board.
  • Next, you need to drill the holes where you plan to place your buttons. Your holes shouldn't be very thick- just large(enough) to easily thread a needle through considerable times.

Method 2: Upholster The Headboard

Here are the easy steps for the upholster process:
  • Firstly, purchase some fabric, large buttons and batting from a fabric or craft store. Be sure that you have enough fabric in order to cover one side of your headboard.
  • Cover your headboard with the desired number of layers of your purchased batting. Your batting should extend at least one foot (30 cm) over the edge on each side of your headboard.
  • After following all the previous steps, now it's time to trim all the edges of your batting on the back of your headboard to four inches(10cm), now simply staple your batting to the back of your plywood with the help of a staple gun.
  • Dangle the chosen fabric over your headboard. Tuck the edges under and then flip your headboard so the back faces up. Now, you need to pull your fabric tight & then staple your fabric to the plywood. Your selected fabric should cover your batting on the back entirely. Once your fabric is totally secured, now simply trim the extra fabric with the help of a scissors.
  • Next, you have to thread a needle with fishing line or heavy thread & then push it through with your first hole and out through with your batting and your fabric from the back to the front and then simply run your needle through with a large button.
  • Now you simply attach your button, you can do this with either 1-2 drilled holes, depends on what you decided. Whatever you choose be sure that you pull your button tight to create the tufted look in your batting.
  • Repeat this button process with each of your holes until your headboard is tufted in your desired pattern.
  • This is your final step, secure your headboard to your wall behind the bed. Use the headboard hanger, which you can get from the home improvement stores. These have 2 pieces of metal, one that you attach to your headboard and one that you attach to your wall. They slot together by securing the board to your wall.
