How To Make An Upholstered Headboard With Legs: 6 Easy Parts To Build Headboards

6 Easy Parts To Build An Upholstered Headboard With Legs

In order to build an upholstered headboard with legs, go through all the parts mentioned below:

Part 1: Size And Shape

First of all, the user needs to measure the width and decide how high the headboard should be. Here it's very important to know that box spring, mattress, as well as decorative pillows will cover good parts of the headboard, so it's very important to add more height to compensate this space. Now the user can experiment on the newspaper until the desired shape for a top is achieved. They can go for the shapes like straight across, a perfect arch, cut at the corners, etc.

Part 2: Cut The Wood

Now, after the measurement is done then its time to cut down the wood for the headboard and legs using the jigsaw. If the headboard will be rectangular then the user can proceed to cover it with foam. In the case of the curves and other shapes, simply trace down the top pattern created with the paper, onto the board and cut along this pattern with the help of jigsaw. After its done then lightly sand around the outer edge using medium-grit sandpaper.

Part 3: Foam And Batting

In this part, the user needs to cut down the upholstery foam to the size of the headboard wood frame but keep 1 inch extra and then lay down the foam over the frame. Tack the foam to the back of the frame tightly by pulling it on the edges and at the same time stapling it to the backside of the frame. In place of the staple, the user can also secure the foam to the wood frame using a spray mount adhesive. Next, step is to lay down the batting on the foam and cut accordingly, adding at least 2 inches all the way around. Now again staple the batting to the backside of the frame where it won’t be visible.

Part 4: Sheeting

Now its time to cover the headboard with a piece white sheeting and secure it with the staples all the way back of the headboard. This will help to provide a layer of the lining that will also make it very easier to change the fabric in the future without touching the foam or batting under it.

Part 5: Prepare And Attach Decorative Fabric

  1. The user needs to iron the decorative fabric and keep its face down to the work area. Place the covered headboard, face down over the top of it.
  2. Now the next step is to cut down the fabric of the same shape and size, but its important to add about 4inch extra and start wrapping around the backside of the headboard. For stapling the fabric to the back, start at the center, its advisable to make sure that any pattern that is on the fabric should be properly centered and well straight.
  3. When there are about 12 inches of the top stapled fabric, at this time switch to the bottom edge. Smooth down the fabric and staple it in several places on the bottom edge. Lift the headboard up to check out the work before going for stapling the sides. Once everything is fine staple the fabric to the sides. Now at last staple lining fabric to the backside of the headboard, it should cover all the raw edges of the fabric as well as the batting, and foam.

Part 6: Fix The Legs And Secure To The Wall

Before attaching the legs cover them with lining or decorative fabric, simply stapling the fabric to the backside of the leg. Then put the headboard face down over a flat surface. Attach the legs to the headboard, but about 2 inches in from the side edges.
