3 Easy Parts & Items Needed To Build A Wooden Planter Box

The users can easily build the wooden planter box by following the below-described parts with steps after collecting the certain items required for the process:
Items Required
  • Plants And Seeds
  • Wood
  • Planting Soil
  • Screwdriver & Screws
  • Vinyl Screen
  • Small Nails And Hammer

Part 1: Sizing And Trimming Down The Wood

  • Step 1: The users need to start by deciding how small or the large they want their box for the planter to be. The decision of the users should completely be based upon how many plants they want to plant in their planter box and also should be based upon the area size where they will place their planter box.
  • Step 2: Then they need to purchase their wood as the cedar wood will work great for building the planter box as the users can easily work with this type of wood and this wood can also hold it up against any elements by which the wooden planter can be exposed to. If in case the users want to create the 4x2 ft planter box then they need to purchase the 12-foot wood board that can be trimmed down to build the planter sides and the width of the wood should be near about 10 inches. The users will also need the wood piece that can be used to form the planter box base.
  • Step 3: Then the users need to trim down the wood as per the actual size and to do so they need to use the measuring tape to calculate the size dimensions on all the sides. Then they need to mark down those places where the users will form their trim by using the sharp pencil or the simple pen as well. Then they need to use the electric saw or the hand saw to trim the marked pieces in the straight cut respectively.

Part 2: Affixing The Boards

  • Step 1: The users need to make the pilot holes in both the boards as the pilot holes are that type of holes that are usually drilled through the wood surface in order to make sure that the wood will not break when they will affix the screws within it. The users only need to drill the pilot holes over the edges of the 2 boards. Then the users need to drill 3 more pilot holes from the board corner and the middle pilot hole should be placed in the center of the board width.
  • Step 2: Then they need to affix the boards by using the galvanized screws. The galvanized screws are better to be used in the outdoor planter box as the galvanized metal will not get rusted so easily. Then they need to align the boards in a way that the pilot holes will be postured with outside edges. Then they need to use the drill and the bits as well in order to be assured that each one of the screws will go through each of the pilot holes and through the connected board.
  • Step 3: Then they need to calculate the measurements of the inner length and the thickness in order to find out the size of the box base. Then the users need to trim down the board for the box base by following the taken measurements. Then they need to place the trimmed board within the planter box and then use the drill and the screws to affix the trimmed board with the box sides.
  • Step 4: Then they need to drill the holes for the drainage purpose at the base of the box and to do so they need to flip the planter box over and then use the drill to form 5 holes at the box base. The drainage holes are mandatory in the planter box as many plants will easily develop the disease if their roots remain wet for a longer period of time.

Part 3: Doing The Final Touch-ups

  • Step 1: The users need to lay the vinyl sheet over the base of the box as this will help in preventing the planter wood. The users need to trim the sheet as per the size of the box base and then lay it over the base and then affix it by using the small nails. The users are advised to drill the drainage holes over the vinyl screen as well.
  • Step 2: In order to give the planter box a smooth finish the users are advised to use the fine-grit sandpaper and rub it over the entire surface of the planter box. Then clean up all the sanding dust by using the soft dry cloth. In order to make the planter box look more attractive, the users can paint down the outer surface of the planter box. The users are advised not to paint the inner surfaces of the plant box as it can pollute the soil.
