How To Make Back Tab Curtains: Step By Step Guide Of Making Back Tab Curtains

Step By Step Guide & Items Needed For Making Back Tab Curtains

The lined, hidden-back-tab curtains will create flowing & the pleated-look panels and the side panels under a drapery or alone on the decorative curtain rod, and these immobile curtains fit wherever a conventional pleated panel is used. The lining escalates the drape factor of the most fabrics & also decreases the possibility of the sun damage to your fabric. If you want to make back tab curtains by yourself then you just need to gather all the required items and then go through the step by step guide:

Items Needed

  • Fabric & Drapery Lining
  • Measuring Tape & Scissors
  • Straight Pins & Iron
  • Sewing Machine
  • Self-Erasing Marking Pencil
  • 2-Inch Grosgrain Ribbon

Step By Step Guide

  • First of all, cut your fabric 6 inches wider than the required finished flat width of your curtain & 12 inches longer than the finished length of your curtain. Now cut your lining to the finished flat width & 9 inches longer than the finished length of your curtain. Normally, a flat back-tab curtain is 1 1/2 times wider than your window being covered. Here is an example, for a window 20 inches wide, your flat curtain width is 30 inches. For a flat curtain 30 inches wide & 80 inches long, cut your fabric 36 inches wide & 92 inches long and your lining 30 inches wide & 89 inches long.
  • Next, turn as well as sew your hems. Sew a double 4-inch hem on your fabric & a double 3-inch hem on your lining. Turn the top edge of your lining over 4 inches toward the wrong side & press. Turn the long edges of your fabric over 1 1/2 inches twice. Turn the top edge of your fabric over 4 inches toward the wrong side & press.
  • Now you need to lay the curtain on your table, the right side of your fabric against your table & the top edge toward you. Open the side hem folds on your fabric, leave the top folds of your fabric & lining in place. Lay your lining on top of your fabric with the wrong sides together. Align the top folded edge of your lining 1/4 inch down from the top folded edge of your fabric.
  • Then you need to pin the layers together across your top edge. Align with the long edges of your lining to the second fold crease on the side edges of your fabric. Refold your fabric side hems, enclosing your lining. The lining section is 1 inch shorter than your fabric section.
  • By using 1/4 inch at the top edge of your curtain results in the leftover 3/4 inch being conspicuous at the bottom hem edges. Pin the side hem layers together & sew close to your second fold. You now need to use thread, needle, and tension suited to your fabric and the lining, according to your sewing machine's instruction manual.
  • Lay your curtain on your table, the top edge toward you, your lining on the surface. You need to calculate the number of tabs by dividing the flat width of your curtain by 6. Add 1 to the result for the number of the tabs required if placed 6 inches apart.
  • Now you need to cut back tabs from 2-inch wide gross-grain ribbon 5 inches long. Turn each end over 1/2-inch & press. Then you have to draw a line across your lining, from side hem to side hem, 4 inches from the folded edge of your lining.
  • Lay your tabs horizontal on the lining, spaced equitably across with the width. Align one folded end of your tab with the lining top fold & the other end with the drawn line. Pin your tabs in place.
  • Now you need to sew across your curtain, 1/8 inch below the folded top edge of your lining, securing your lining & your tabs in place across the top. Also, sew across your curtain 1/8-inch above the drawn line then you need to secure the tabs to your curtain.
  • Finally, you need to thread your curtain onto your rod & adjust your pleats to equal width & depth to complete the lined hidden tab curtain project.
