Steps To Whitewash Dark Kitchen Cabinets

Whitewashing the dark wood cabinets makes them look more beautiful as white is the versatile color that adds elegance to the cabinets as well as keeps the beauty of natural wood appealing. The whitewashing does not require any tough technique to follow rather can be done using a simple technique. The steps to whitewash the dark wood kitchen cabinets with ease are as follows:
  1. Examine Material:
  2. The first step will be to examine properly the kitchen cabinets for the material they are made up of. The whitewashing is much suited to the softwood.
  3. Remove The Doors & Drawers:
  4. After that, the user needs to remove all the doors and drawers from the kitchen cabinets for smooth processing. The step allows the user to paint drawers & doors separately.
  5. Clean With Degreaser:
Once the doors and drawers are removed, the user needs to follow it up by cleaning all the cabinet parts by using a degreaser cleaner. The hardware like knobs, hinges, etc. should also be cleaned with the degreaser. Once the degreaser is applied, the user needs to wipe off the dirt from the cabinets entirely by using a clean rag.
  6. Remove Old Stains:
  7. In order to remove old stains, the user needs to apply a paint stripper over the entire cabinets by using steel wool. The user needs to let the paint stripper sit over the old stains as per label instructions before wiping it off with a rag.
  8. Sand The Cabinets:
  9. The next step will be to sand all parts of the cabinets by using fine-grit sandpaper. The step is required to make the entire surface smooth for whitewashing. It is necessary to remove sanding dust with a rag before proceeding to the next step.
  10. Apply Wood Conditioner:
  11. If the cabinets are made of softwood, it is necessary to apply wood conditioner over the entire cabinets and let it sit for about 30 minutes before proceeding further.
  12. Sand The Cabinets Again:
  13. Once the conditioner dries, the user needs to lightly sand the cabinets using a 120 grit-sandpaper in order to give cabinets the best-whitewashed look. The sanding dust should be wiped off using a clean cloth.
  14. Prepare & Apply Whitewash:
  15. After that, the user needs to prepare whitewash as per the label instructions and apply it over the cabinet parts using a paintbrush or a roller. If required, the user can apply a second coat of whitewash as well once the first coat dries completely. Before applying the second coat of whitewash, it has been recommended to sand the surface lightly using fine-grit sandpaper.
  16. Reattach Doors & Drawers:
  17. The last step will be to reattach doors and drawers back to the cabinets in their order of removal. The user needs to make sure that the whitewash has dried completely before reattaching the doors & drawers.
