Methods To Repair/Fix Laminate Wood Flooring Scratches

Laminate Flooring is very much resistant to scratches and there are three types of scratches that can occur on the laminate flooring as mentioned below along with their repair methods:

Minor Scratches

Minor scratches can be repaired by following the below-given method:
  1. Purchase A Floor Repair Marker:
    First, the user needs to purchase a touch-up marker for his laminate flooring. The user needs to make sure that the selected marker should be matching the flooring color. The touch-up marker can be purchased from the local home improvement store or online.
  2. Clean The Flooring:
    Before proceeding with the repair process, it is necessary for the user to clean the entire flooring with a vacuum or a dust mop. In case, the flooring contains a stubborn stain, the user can clean it up with a mild detergent soap and warm water. After that, the user needs to allow the flooring to air dry or else he can dry it up with a microfiber cloth.
  3. Apply The Filler:
    After that, the user needs to apply a filler marker on to the scratch marks starting from one end of the scratch to the other. The user needs to apply the filler in short strokes in order to make sure that he covers the scratch fully.
  4. Blend In The Filler:
    The last step in the method will be to blend in the filler with a microfiber cloth by rubbing the edges of the scratch with it starting from one end of the scratch to the other. The user needs to buff the cloth around the scratch slowly in order to smoothen the wax filler.


Moderate Scratches

The moderate scratches on the laminate flooring can be fixed by following the below-given method:
  1. Purchase A Repair Kit:
    The first step in the method will be to buy a repair kit or a bottle of putty that should be matching the laminate flooring color. If the user purchases a repair kit, it will contain applicators required for the repair along with different colors of dye. The user can also purchase pre-colored putty separately but he needs to match its color with the flooring.
  2. Clean Scratches:
    The next step after that will be to clean the scratches by using a microfiber cloth and a mixture of soap & water. First, the user needs to wipe out dirt from the scratches with a clean microfiber cloth followed by scrubbing the remaining dirt with soapy hot water. The mixture should contain a bucket of hot water with 2 tablespoons of mild dish detergent or baby shampoo into it.
  3. Prepare Putty:
    After that, the user needs to prepare putty by mixing the dye into putty. The user needs to make sure that the color of putty matches with the flooring.
  4. Apply Putty Over The Scratch:
    Once the putty is ready, the user needs to apply it over the scratches by spreading it over the scratches with a putty knife. If required, the user can apply more putty over the scratches until they get completely disappeared.
  5. Remove Excess Putty:
    The putty takes around 30 minutes to solidify so it is necessary for the user to remove the excess putty from the scratches by using a dry paper towel. In case, the putty starts to harden before removal, the user can dampen a towel in the soapy water mixture used earlier to remove excess putty.


Deep Scratches

The deep scratches in laminate flooring can be repaired by following the below-given method:
  1. Purchase A Repair Kit:
    In order to repair deep scratches in laminate flooring, the user first needs to purchase a repair kit. Alternate to a repair kit, the user can purchase wax filler sticks separately. The repair kit contains different colors of wax blocks which the user needs to mix together in order to create a color that should match his wooden flooring.
  2. Rub The Wax Blocks Into The Scratches:
    The next step will be to select the wax blocks required to fill in the flooring scratches. After that, the user needs to rub the wax blocks into the scratches of the flooring with the help of a heated knife.
  3. Level The Filler:
    Once the scratches are completely filled with wax blocks, the user needs to wait for 30 minutes to let the wax cool inside the scratches before removing excess filler in order to level up the surface. The excess filler can be removed with a putty knife, credit card, or any other similar tool.
  4. Buff The Surface:
    The last step will be to buff the repaired surface carefully with a clean cloth in order to remove leftover excess filler from the laminate flooring.
