How To Refinish Distressed Hardwood Floors: Easy Steps & Items Required

Distressed hardwoods floors come with own charm and uniqueness. However, sometimes the finish on this floor gets damaged accidentally and that calls for refinishing the entire flooring. The refinishing of the distressed hardwood floor must be done very carefully in order to keep its quality maintain for years ahead. It is also important to consider what chemicals or solvents are being used to clean the floor to get the job done accordingly.

Easy stepwise method to refinish the distressed hardwood floors along with items required are mentioned below:

The main items required for the refinishing process are as follow:
  • Floor cleaner, Maroon pad.
  • Industrial sandpaper, China-bristle vacuum.
  • 6-inch China-bristle brush, painters pad.
  • Plastic painters tray, and finish.

Directions To Proceed

Follow the steps mentioned below:
  1. Cleaning Product: Application of the only manufacturer approved cleaning product must be used for removing the dirt and grime built up from the floor. Apply the cleaning product to the entire floor and softly rub using the maroon pad.
  2. Scrapping: After removing all dirt from the floor follow up by soft scrapping using 180- to 220-grit or pad. Paper cutting must be large to accommodate the maroon pad. Once done rub the paper on the entire floor with the hand.
  3. Wood Grain: Take the 3" pad to rub the floor in the direction of the grains.
  4. Vacuum: Once done vacuum the floor to clean the leftover and wipe the floor using the microfiber cloth. Use dampened rag to clean the floor again till the floor gets completely clean.
  5. Oil-Based Finish: In order to apply the oil based finish 4- to 6-inch china bristle brush is recommended with the lambswool applicator. Ensure to apply the finish only in the grain direction.
  6. Water-based Finish: In case of the water-based finish the application using the T-Bar is not recommended.
  7. Painters Tray: Pour the finish in the painters tray and use painters pad to apply the finish. Make sure, to use the plastic painter's tray due to the fact that Meta trays react with the water-based finishes. The finish must be applied in the up and down direction covering 2 or 3 planks at one time.
  8. Check: Check for the floor for any left spaces to treat immediately. If everything is done up to the mark let the floor dry and enjoy the refinishing on the distressed hardwood floor.
