Best Methods To Paint Old Wooden Furniture

Prepping The Furniture

  1. Remove: Under this the first step is to remove all the knobs or handles or any hardware from the furniture, these all the hardware can be simply unscrewed, this is the important step to protect the hardware from the drips and will make the painting job easier.
  2. Repairs: The next step is to look for any repairing job like chipped, holed, or pitted surfaces, in case there are then patched with wood filler. For the excess putty knife scrape away with the putty knife then allow it to dry.
  3. Sanding: Once the wood filler is dried than sand the area with the sandpaper in case of the large furniture it is best to use the orbit sander, in case of the Edges, grooves, and any other nooks and crannies use the small sanding block for the sanding purpose or simply sand by hand. Sanding will help to remove all the grime and dirt from the surface and will remove the existing finish also.
  4. Cleaning: After sanding it is important to clean all the sanding dust and residue, simply wipe the area with the tack cloth, the user can also use the slightly damp cloth.

Priming

  1.   2. Sanding: Once the primer is dry then sand the surface again, sand using fine grit paper on every area where priming was done, sanding will help the paint to adhere to the surface much better. Once sanding is done then clean the sanding dust.
  3. Second Coat: The next step is to add another coat of the primer.

Painting And Finishing

  1. Thin Layer: Apply the thin layer of the paint latex or any other paint. It is important to apply the even coats of the furniture without applying too much paint at the same time.
  2. Dry: Once the paint is applied and is still wet then the user needs to go over the area again with the brush in the long and even strokes, always use the best quality paint brush. Allow the paint to dry completely.
  3. Second Coat: Once the first coat is completely dried then give the surface a light sanding with the fine grit sandpaper then go for the second coat.
  4. Seal: The last optional step is to seal the paint, simply apply the clear coat that will secure the paint from nicks and scratches.
