How To Paint Black Furniture: 3 Easy Methods

3 Easy Methods To Paint Furniture Black

If you want to paint your furniture in black color, you simply need to follow all the given methods and steps to finish your task. Here are the 3 methods to do this project without wasting your time:

Method 1: Preparing Your Work Area And Choosing Your Paints

Here are the quick and easy steps to prepare your area and choose your paint to follow the next method:
  1. First of all you need to select your work area. Always try to work in an area that is well-ventilated. Also, lighting is important as it will help you spot any type of imperfections in your working process. Working outside is best for these types of work.
  2. After selecting your working area, now prepare an area that you have to work on. Always remember to cover your area with something to avoid it from getting dirty or discarded, you can use newspaper for this purpose but if you don't have a newspaper, then you can use butcher paper, old tablecloths, newsprint, or old bedsheets alternatively.
  3. Next, wear proper clothing(old cloths) because paint can damage your clothes.
  4. Once done, now you need to determine your furniture before following the up-coming steps that means what paint or primer will work on your furniture. You can choose from indoor primer and paint intended for surfaces such as wood, plastic, and metal. If you have painted furniture then you need to select the primer intended for pre-painted surfaces.
  5. Consider what sort of paint you are going to use for your furniture. You can use acrylic, latex, or oil-based paint. You can use spray paint and wood stains as well.
  6. Now you need to decide what sort of finish you want on your furniture. Paint comes in all sorts of finishes, with its own drawbacks & benefits.
  7. Think for a while about your final design. Earlier you start painting the furniture black, ask yourself what will be your final design.

Method 2: Sanding And Priming Your Furniture

  1. First of all, you have to remove drawers and other pieces which you don't want to paint. If the furniture has some removable pieces like doors and drawers then take these off and then keep them aside. You need to remove hinges, knobs and pulls if it is not possible then you can cover all these items by using a painter's tape.
  2. Fix scratches & dents, if any. Imperfectness easily shows up on black surfaces & even more so if the surface has a glossy finish. If your furniture has any holes or dents fill these in by using some wood filler or putty.
  3. Now start sanding(fine-grit sandpaper 180 & 220 grit) as it will give the primer a rough surface to grip more better on it. Softly buff the entire surface of your furniture. Remember do not strip the full previous paint job because you only need to create a rough texture.
  4. Wipe your furniture down by using a tack cloth. You need to clean any dust created from the sanding process.
  5. Next, you need to apply a grey, paint primer to the furniture because the grey primer helps make the shadows more visible and this will help you find & fix any imperfections on the surface. You can either spray or paint on the primer. To avoid any puddles & drips, you have to apply individual light coats of primer (while letting the primer dry betwixt coats) as opposing to one thick coat.
  6. Take a tack cloth and sandpaper to remove any imperfections. Once your primer has dried wholly then run sandpaper(220 grit) over any imperfections in the primer like paint bubbles, drips & globs. After that, wipe your furniture again with a tack cloth.
  7. Before following the painting process, let your primer dry for at least 24 hours.

Method 3: Painting And Finishing Your Furniture

Once you've successfully sanded & primer your furniture, now follow the final method to finish your painting work:
  1. First you need to choose your brushes and foam applicators. Wood and paint stains can be easily applied to your furniture in many ways: by using paintbrushes, foam rollers and foam applicators. In order to paint the large, flat areas of your furniture, you need a foam roller or a larger angles brush (at least one inch wide). You also need a small brush to reach carvings, crevices & corners.
  2. Next you need to condition your paintbrush if you are going to use paint or wood stain. If you are going to use latex or acrylic paint then you need to dip your brush in water; if you're using oil-based paint, then dip the brush in the thinner.
  3. Now you have to apply a thin coat of paint to your furniture and then let it dry, and then apply another coat. Spraying or brushing the paint on in many, thin layers as opposing to one thick layer will give a smoother finish & also help to reduce brush strokes. If you are applying 1 thick layer of your paint, then wait for at least 1 complete day before applying another coat.
  4. Start your work with the largest areas first and then move onto the details. Use long strokes when applying the paint to large and flat areas of furniture. If the furniture is made of wood, then you need to apply the paint according to the grain, not against it. Paint the corners & details last.
  5. Contemplate sanding the furniture before applying the last coat of paint. Erstwhile, the paint will drip or puddle, no matter how carefully you are working. Other times, bits of dust may fall onto your furniture piece & stick to the paint. If it happens with you then take fine-grit sandpaper(220 grit) & buff the surface. Once finished, now wipe your furniture down with a clean tack cloth & apply 1 or 2 more coats of paint.
  6. Consider sealing your painted furniture. Some stains or paint come with a sealer already in them. Others will need to be sealed for additive protection of your furniture. Look for polyurethane or polyacrylic sealer in either brush on or spray-on form.
  7. Finally reassemble your furniture, once the paint and sealer have dried completely then you have to put your furniture back together. Remove any taped-off areas where you applied the painter's tape in previous steps, screw on the knobs, hinges, pulls reinserts the drawers and doors.
