Steps And Items Needed To Paint A Stained Door

If you want to paint a stained door yourself then you just need to collect all the given items and follow all the steps to finish this task. Here are items list & steps for this process:

Things You Will Need

  • Screwdriver, Fans (optional) & Rubber Gloves
  • 2 Buckets & TSP Or Other Degreasing Cleaners
  • 2 Abrasive Sponges & 180-Grit Sandpaper
  • Vacuum With A Brush Attachment
  • Paint Deglosser Or Mineral Spirits (optional)
  • Rags (optional) & Painter's Tape
  • Oil-Based Primer & Paintbrushes

Steps

After collecting all the required items now follow all the given steps:
  • First of all, you need to unscrew the accessible hardware from your doors such as the doorknobs & kick plates. Open doors & windows if you can, in order to get ventilation.
  • Wear the rubber gloves in order to protect your hands. You need to fill two bucktes with clean water. Add the TSP(trisodium phosphate) or degreasing TSP substitute in one bucket by following the product instructions to know the proper ratio for water to cleaner.
  • Now you need to wash your stained woodwork thoroughly with the cleaning solution. Take a sponge to apply the mixture & then work into the wooden door, and then dip another sponge in your second bucket, wring out your sponge & then use it to rinse the applied solution off from the wood. Always try to work on small areas at a time, replace the water in your buckets if you see that the water look cloudy.
  • Allow the wooden door surfaces to dry completely. Sand your door with sandpaper(180-grit) to scuff the wood of your door and prepare your door for primer. Vacuum the door surfaces with a brush attachment to remove the dust which comes after the sanding process.
  • Now you need to apply paint de-glosser or mineral spirits in order to rag if your wood is varnished. Wipe over the applied varnish to scuff it further. Follow the guidance on the paint deglosser can to determine whether to rinse it off or not.
  • Cover all the surface of your door which you don't want to paint with the painter's tape. Paint your woodwork with an oil-based primer to seal the surface & avert the stain from bleeding through. Apply the 2nd coat as the product instructs.
  • Finally you have to wait for the primer to dry wholly. Paint your doors & windows, and allow the applied paint to dry entirely. Carefully peel off the applied painter's tape. Reinstall all the hardware which you removed before starting the process.
  • Warning for this process, dispose of all the used rags contaminated with mineral spirits in sealed containers full water. Mineral spirits can unprompted if they are not disposed of properly.
