10 Easy Steps For Painting A Steel Door

Painting a steel door will make it look much better, besides that painting can also help to prevent future rust or any damage to the surface of the door. In order to keep your steel door up to date as well as rust-free, you need to perform the painting process regularly. Follow the below-mentioned steps carefully to paint your steel door:
  1. Hinge Pins: The first step is to open the door as wide as possible to expose the hinges that hold it to the doorframe. To the base of the hinge pin press a nail, that is right on the point where the door pivots open as well as close. With a hammer hit the nail until the hinge pin will lose and at the same time the top is pushed away from the hinge panels. Repeat the same process with another hinges.
  2. Pull The Door: Hold the door in place with the help of one hand, to pry the hinge pins out of the door hinges use a flathead screwdriver. After that pull the door out of the doorframe.
  3. Degreasing Cleaner: Now the next step is to wipe down the door with a degreasing cleaner as this will help to give the paint a smooth as well as a clean surface to adhere to, use a degreasing cleaner with a rag. Be sure to clean any dirt, grease from the surface of the door that could otherwise hit the paint job.
  4. Remove: Use the appropriate screwdriver for each hardware, unscrew any hardware in the door that the user doesn’t want to paint over like doorknob, strike plate, or a door knocker.
  5. Painter’s Tape: Use a roll of painter’s tape in order to tape any areas that you are not going to paint. Work all around the sides of the door and cover each of the edges. The tape helps to keep the paint on the face of the door and will make the lines of each edge as clean as possible.
  6. Fix Any Dents: Before moving on to the next step fix any dents on the door’s surface. First of all, use the 80-grit sandpaper on any dented areas before covering the dent with a patching compound or any auto body filler. After the sanding is done apply the filler and leave it to dry for around 40 minutes and then sand again using the 150-grit sandpaper as this will help to make the area level with the rest of the door.
  7. Sand The Entire Surface: To allow the primer as well as paint to adhere to the surface of the door strongly, sand it lightly using the fine 400-grit sandpaper on the entire surface of the door.
  8. Cleaning: The Sanding will create a lot of dust that can easily get caught in the paint and will affect the look of the finished door. For that dampen a clean cloth and start wiping down the surface of the door, so that the dust is removed which is leftover from sanding it down.
  9. Primer: Apply the oil-based primer, it is important to prime the door with a product that is designed specifically for metal. Apply the primer using a small paint roller, give two coats of primer, let the first coat dry then apply the second coat.
  10. Apply One Coat Of Paint: The user needs to ensure that the paint is designed for exterior use, like exterior satin or semi-gloss paint. Use a soft roller to apply the paint and brush to paint any grooves or panels on the door. Let the first coat dry then apply the second coat. Before installing the door the paint should be completely dry.
