Part 1: Preparing Your Garage Door

  • First of all, you have to choose a good clear weather day to paint things. Weather plays an important role and has a big impact on the goodness of exterior paint. Now see your project for a stretch that should not be too hot, cold or humid. Moisture can waste all your work. You have to check the weather condition online for some days because a couple of days should be clear if you want to give your paint a chance to set properly. Try to paint your garage doors for the weekend. Weekends are the freest days for you.
  • Now start cleaning garage door, simply you have to wipe away the dust, dirt which you see on the garage door. You have to scrub it properly from the top to bottom, side to side, don't forget the corners. You can use a sponge or a cloth soaked in soapy water. Wash the door properly with the help of hose than make it dry with the help of a clean towel. Remember never try to apply fresh paint on the wet surface it should be dry properly.
  • Next lay protective drop cloth as soon as you start work, make sure that you covered the area beneath the garage with cloth on both sides. Dropcloth or a plastic tarp is a good example for you to prevent stains from splattering or dripping paint. This thing also helps you to catch the dirt and other loose particles near or from your door. Still, if you don't have these two things you can simply use a blanket or newspaper sheets.
  • You have to tape off those areas where you don't want to paint. You can choose painters tape to cover those places or spots where you thing paint may spread. For example, edges where the door joins with the wall or where it meets with the stucco or bricks. You have to line up the tape with care. To avoid the margin of error you can choose the wide rolls of painter tape. This tape is easily available at the hardware stores.

Part 2: Applying A New Coat Of Paint

  • Now you have to select a shade which you want to paint on the garage door. You have to purchase it from the hardware shop. You can also choose different paints to give your garage door a more amazing look. Remember you have to choose the paint for the exterior only. Try to choose a lighter color for your garage door which don't get fade in the sunlight.
  • Next apply the primer as it helps the fresh paint to stick. Even Primer helps you to get a flat base for the paint which you will use and also provides great durability. Apply a single coat of primer on the gate. Make sure the primer is dry before applying the paint over it. If you are planning to touch up your garage doors with the same shade that you need to dispense a separate coat of primer. But you have the choice that paints in which primer is inbuilt. You have to make the primer dry for about 12 - 13 hours.
  • Now paint the smaller areas first with the help of a handheld brush. This brush is narrow in width and will help you to brush the deeper areas. You have to handle the brush slowly and carefully. Check whether you have painted all the places or not. YOu get a solid finish you have to see the conditions of your garage door.
  • Now you can roll the new coat of paint on your door garage. You have to use a wide paint roller in order to cover the broad spaces of the door. In some cases, one coat is enough but if you want a lighter color than you have to paint multiple coats on it.
  • Allow the paint on your door to dry for at least 12 -15 hours. There should be good air in the garage that helps it to dry properly. Keep your vehicles away from the garage for 1 - 2 days. It will take more than a week to cure fully. It is best for you to keep the door in a down position so that it will receive good plenty of airflow.
