Two Easy Parts And Items Needed To Paint A Metal Screen Door

If you want to paint the metal screen door yourself then you just need to collect all the required items and go through the step by step parts to finish this task without wasting your precious time:

Things You’ll Need

  • Household Cleaner
  • Sponge
  • Bucket
  • Primer
  • Paint
  • Painter’s Tape
  • Paintbrushes

Part-I: Cleaning And Priming Your Door

  • First of all, open your doors & support your screen by sliding the internal hinges. You can also use items like a chair to keep it open. This thing will help you to excess the side edge easily. It also prevents it from getting to extend your front door.
  • Now you have to wipe your door with the help of the cleaner or with the sponge. You have to take 240-470ml of cleaner, pour it into a bucket and mix some warm water in it. The household cleaner is used to clean the products and also designed for the general hygienic purpose.
  • Now you have to take your sponge and dip it into the bucket, simply take this on the door and then wipe down. You have to rub with the help of a sponge on the door in a circular motion to get the extra grime.
  • Make sure that you dip the sponge and quickly wipe down the door to use fresh cleaner each time, you can use this cleaner for both wooden as well as metal doors.
  • If you see any holes on the door then you have to repair it, especially when you think to paint a wooden or metal door. You can use sparkling compound and the putty knife to fill that hole and dents less than a point 32cm deep. You can also use 2 part filler for the deeper holes. Directly you can apply the compound or filler and level it off on the surface by wiping it with the help of the putty knife. Make sure the compound or putty fills the entire hole.
  • You have to protect the areas where you don't want to paint. For this, you have to use the painter's tape. Cut the pieces of painter's tape on the door at those points where you don't want to get paint. This tape is enough sticky that it will adhere to the door only but will not damage the surface of the door glow.
  • Now you have to apply the primer to your door before you apply paint on it. It's necessary as the primer prevents your door from stains, evens out your surfaces and help's your new paint to get a stick on the door. Start to apply the primer from the top of the door and paint towards down with the help of brush strokes. Also, read the specific instructions mentioned in the container before you start.
  • Now, make sure you give your primer enough time to dry entirely. Some primer dries quickly in about an hour. Some times drying time varies because of the high humidity or cool temperature.

Part-II: Applying Your Paint

  • First of all, you have to use that paint which is especially meant for the surface of your door. You can easily get it from the local home shop where you can find paint for both metal as well as a wooden door depending on your needs. You have to choose some paintbrushes of different sizes according to your door frame.
  • Now, dip the selected brush into the paint and then apply it to the door frame, you have to start painting from the top of your door. Be careful you have not to scoop up much paint or dunk brush deep into the paint. If you apply this, an excess of paint will run down to your door.
  • You have to give your door 30-120 minutes(up to 2 hours) for the drying process. Make sure that the paint dry completely. This will help to prevent the door from streaking and brush strokes.
  • You can apply additional coats of paint if needed, but check whether the first coat is dry or not.
  • After applying the last coat, you have to remove the painter's tape immediately, if you leave it there then some of your edges may peel away and will cause uneven lines.
  • Lastly, you have to wait for 1-3 hours to dry the door fully, after applying the final coat, keep your door undisturbed for a couple of hours until it dries fully.
