How To Lay Linoleum On Plywood: 11 Steps To Lay

Steps To Lay Linoleum On Plywood Floor

Linoleum is a type of flooring that is constructed out of natural materials such as mineral fillers, wood flour, ground cork dust, pine rosin, and linseed oil. All such materials are brought together to form the foundation & base of the linoleum. In order to lay/install linoleum over a plywood subfloor, the user needs to follow the below-given steps;
  1. Lay Moisture Barrier: The first step will be to lay a paint-on moisture barrier over the low grade or less quality plywood subfloor. It has been recommended to lay 4-6 mm thick plastic sheeting over the subfloor.
  2. Store Linoleum In Room Temperature: Before the installation process, it is necessary to store the linoleum inside the room where it has to be installed for one or two days. The step will allow linoleum to settle & get used with the temperature of the room.
  3. Remove Doors:
  4. After that, the user needs to remove the doors by unscrewing the hinges with a screwdriver. The doors along with screws need to be stored at a secure place for future use.
  5. Cleaning: The next step will be to remove all the dirt & dust from the subfloor by sweeping or vacuuming. It has been recommended to clean the plywood subfloor before laying a moisture barrier over it.
  6. Lay Linoleum: After that, the user needs to lay linoleum over the entire flooring making sure everything is covered. It has been recommended to take help from a friend during the linoleum laying process. Besides that, it is necessary to curl some linoleum up against the wall for which the user needs to cut the sheets in larger sizes than required.
  7. Cut Excess Linoleum: The next step will be to cut the excess linoleum that is up against the wall by using a utility knife. It has been recommended to cut linoleum on each side until it flushes against the walls & the floor's molding.
  8. Roll Back Linoleum: After that, the user needs to roll back half the linoleum in a big loop. It is necessary to tape down the rolled linoleum so that it stays in place.
  9. Apply Adhesive: The next step will be to apply & spread linoleum adhesive over the visible plywood subfloor. It has been recommended to follow the label instructions for the application process.
  10. Paste Rolled Linoleum Down: After the adhesive application process, the user needs to lay back the rolled linoleum over the adhesive covered subfloor. It has been recommended to apply pressure starting from the center in order to paste the linoleum down. Alternatively, the user can paste the linoleum with a 100 lb. roller.
  11. Repeat The Steps: The next step will be to repeat the steps starting from roll back to paste rolled linoleum down in order to lay the other part of the linoleum as well.
  12. Re-install Doors: The last step will be to reinstall doors that were removed earlier by screwing them with a screwdriver or any other suitable tool.
