Upholstery is mostly used to make furniture seats such as springs, webbing, padding, and leather as well as fabric covers. Sometimes, your furniture may easily catch the smoke of cigarettes and removing the cigarette smoke smell is not an easy task. In order to get rid of cigarette smoke smell from upholstered furniture, you just need to perform below mentioned procedure.

Part 1: Detach All Removable Pieces

  • If you have removable pieces of upholstered furniture then remove all the attached pieces such as cushion covers from your furniture.
  • See for a customer care label on your furniture, if you see the dry clean only logo then don't wash them in regular washing machine.
  • If they can be washed in your daily use washing machine then wash them, if not then take these items for a dry cleaning process.

Part 2: Deodorize Cushions And Pillows

Before reassembling the cushions and pillows clean them from smoke smell.
  • First place the foam pillows and cushions in garbage bags with fabric softener sheets (unscented) for at least 3 days.
  • If it still smells then follow the given methods to remove the smell:
    • Mix 1 cup of vinegar(white) and 1 cup of water (warm) in a spray bottle, shake the spray bottle with care before spraying the mixture on the pillows & cushions and let dry naturally or you can leave them in sunlight.
    • Take 1 cup of vodka and 1 cup of water (warm) in a spray bottle. Lightly spray it on the surfaces and then let dry the upholstery naturally.
    • Use a spray deodorizer that can easily remove odors from your furniture, simply spray the deodorizer on cushion and pillows and let them dry naturally.


Part 3: Deodorize Non-Removable Upholstery & Reassembling It

If you have non-removable upholstery furniture then you need to follow these given steps to deodorize:
  • Take some baking soda and sprinkle it to the upholstered furniture surfaces. Leave upholstery furniture for 6 hours. Then use a vacuum cleaner in order to get rid of the powder.
  • Lightly spray the vodka and water mixture, vinegar mixture, or the spray deodorizers as you use in previous steps.
  • After spraying the mixture, now let the upholstered furniture dry naturally, which can take few hours. After they dried fully, reassemble your upholstered furniture such as pillows, covers and cushions.
