5 Easy Steps & Items Needed For Measuring Mattress Sag

The sagging mattress doesn't have proper spinal support, as a result, it can leave your back stiff and also very painful when you wake up in the morning. A mattress & the springs naturally develop indentations from years of normal use, however, a mattress can also sag prematurely due to any minor manufacturer's defects. When your mattress is still under warranty and you also want to place a claim with your manufacturer, the extent of your sagging must be meticulously measured. If you want to measure the mattress sag properly, then you just need to collect all the given items and follow the steps carefully. Here is the list of required items and steps for this process. Things Needed For This Process

  • String
  • Painter's Tape
  • Steel Measuring Tape

Steps For This Process

  1. First of all, you need to remove all bedding from the mattress including pads, sheets & foam toppers. The original top of your mattress needs to be exposed so you can meticulously measure the depression.
  2. Now you need to smoothen the top of your mattress with your fingers. This will also disqualify any possible wrinkles in your fabric that could cause the measurements of your sagging to be unreliable.
  3. Next you need to lay string across the width of your mattress so it will reach from one side to the opposite side. It should also cross over the deepest part of your depression. Secure one end of your string to the edge of your mattress with a strip of the painter's tape which does not leave a sticky residue on your fabric when it's removed.
  4. After that, you need to walk to the other side of your bed and mildly pull the unsecured end of your string until it is taut. Secure the end of your string with a strip of your painter's tape. Most of the string rests on top of the surface of your mattress and it does not make any contact where it crosses over your sagging portion.
  5. Finally, pull your steel measuring tape so it will extend a few inches from its housing. Place the end of your tape so it touches the bottom of your sagging portion of your mattress alongside your string. Simply hold the housing upright at a right angle to your mattress. You also need to read the measurement on your tape where it intersects your string. This also tells you how much your mattress is sagging.

Tip & Warning

  • Tip: The yardstick or a ruler can be representative for a steel measuring tape. Rotate the mattress regularly to help avert depressions from forming.
  • Warning: When your string is not pulled so it is taut & measurements won't be accurate. If you file a claim with the company, a professional inspector will be sent to your home to recheck your measurements. Few claims are resolved in favor of the owner.
