How To Install Laminate Flooring On Stairs: Steps To Install

Steps To Install Laminate Flooring On Stairs

Laminate flooring is best suited for high traffic areas. The steps are given below to install the laminate flooring on the stairs:

Step 1: Preparation

  1. Choose Flooring Wisely: The first step is to choose the laminate floor practically. These floors are slippery so best choice is to select a rough and more textured floor for stairs which are less slippery.
  2. Allow The Laminate To Acclimatise: Next step is to acclimatise the laminate floor so that it adjusts with the temperature. Acclimatizing the laminate floor prevents it from contracting and warping.
  3. Remove Existing Flooring, Paint Or Adhesive: Now remove the existing flooring from the stairs. If there is no flooring and the stairs are covered with adhesive or paint then remove the adhesive or paint from the stairs then install the laminate flooring.
  4. Remove Overhang: Stairs have overhang and to make the installation easy remove the overhang from stairs by using a jigsaw and fit the laminate floor into the space.
  5. Measure Stairs And Cut Laminate: Three pieces of laminate floor are sliced for the stairs that are tread piece(top piece), stair nosing(corner piece), and riser piece(front piece).

Step 2: Installation

  1. Lay The Tread: For installation first step is to lay and install the tread piece on the top of the stair using a glue and lay it tightly with the back step.
  2. Install Risers: Next step is to apply wood glue on risers and install them at the front side of the stair.
  3. Fit The Stair Nosing: Now apply glue on the stair surface and place the nose piece on the floor and smoothly press it. Nosing piece is covered with a tape to protect the laminate flooring. A countersink hole is drilled in the nose piece to insert the wood screws.

Step 3: Finishing

  1. Cover Screw Holes: Now use flooring filler to cover the screw holes and remove the tape from the nose piece of stair. Then after 20 minutes, use a wet cloth to make the surface smooth.
  2. Clean The Laminate: Clean the sawdust, debris, or extra filler from the laminate floor before it sets on the floor.
  3. Leave Overnight: Last step is to wait for about 12 hours and let the glue set completely and then walk on the stairs.
