The users can easily treat their untreated wood for outdoor use at home by following the below-mentioned ways:

Way I- Using The Oil

  • Gather The Materials: The users need to start by gathering the tools and the materials that they require while performing this procedure like steel wool, oil, turpentine oil, spare rags, sandpaper, and lint-free cloths as well.
  • Choose The Oil: The most common oils that are specifically used for the waterproofing purpose are the tung, walnut, and the linseed oil as well. The tung oil can be very expensive then the rest of the other two oils and that is why they are advised to be used for the smaller furnishing items. The walnut oil can be purchased in any home store but because of its allergies, this oil is not allowed to use for commercial purposes. The linseed oil is less expensive than the other two oils and can easily be purchased in any home store and is advised to use on any large-sized furnishing items. Nowadays the raw linseed oil is also applied over the kitchen countertop so as to create rich aesthetics.
  • Buy The Oil: The users need to examine their wood item and then they need to decide which part they want to treat by using the oil. In the case of the large furnishing items, the users can use the sealant and the stain. The user is advised to apply oil over the small furnishing items.
  • Make The Mixture: Then the users need to make a mixture of the oil, apple vinegar and the oil that contains the turpentine in the metal container. The users need to keep on mixing the oil so that all the ingredients are mixed up properly.
  • Use The Sandpaper: Before applying the oil mixture the users are advised to smoothen the wood surface by rubbing it down with the high grit sandpaper so as to remove the high or the rigid areas. Then they need to clean up the sanding dust by using the dry cloth.
  • Apply The Oil Mixture: Then they need to apply the one coat of the oil mixture to the entire surface of the wood item and to do so they need to pour the oil over the soft rag and then rub the rag over the wood item. Then allow the first coat of the oil to get dried off completely for almost half an hour and then apply two more coats accordingly.

Way II- Using The Stain

  • Gather The Materials: Start by collecting up the material like an oil-based stain, sandpaper, and paintbrushes so as to accomplish this task.
  • Prepare The Surface: Then the users need to use the metal file or the fine-grit sandpaper and then rub it vigorously all over the surface of the wood item so as to get rid of the imperfections. Then wipe down the wood surface so as to clean up the sanding dust by using the dry cloth respectively.
  • Apply The Initial Coat: Then the users need to apply the first coat of the stain by using the soft paintbrush. The users are advised to apply the stain in an even manner and then allow the first coat of the stain to get dried off completely for almost 4 hours before applying the 2nd coat.
  • Clean Up The Excess Paint: Clean up the unneeded stain from the wood surface by using the tack cloth and then sand down the dried paint surface by the sandpaper so as to make the wood surface ready for the second stain coat.
  • Apply Two More Coats Of Stain: Finally they need to apply the two more coats of the stain to the wood item following the same procedure and then allow wood item to get dried off completely before placing it in the outdoor area.
