How To Secure A Kitchen Island To The Floor: Steps And Items Needed

Steps And Items Needed To Secure Kitchen Island To The Floor

A kitchen island is a kind of cabinet that mostly resembles the design of your kitchen or in other words, we can say complements the kitchen design. If you want to secure a kitchen island to the floor your self then you just need to collect some required items before following certain steps:

Things You Will Need

  • Painter’s Tape, Rag & Measuring Tape
  • 2-Inch By 4-Inch Lumber
  • Pencil & Hand Or circular Saw
  • Washable Marker (Optional)
  • Drill Bit Set & Power Drill
  • 3 1/2-Inch Wood Screws
  • Diamond Drill Bit
  • Phillips Screwdriver Bit

Steps

After collecting all the required items, now follow all the given steps:
  1. Firstly, set kitchen island in place on your floor. Mark all the perimeter or shape of the base of the island on your floor with painter's tape.
  2. Now lift and turn your island on the sides to access the base underneath. After that, measure the free space along the inside edge of the island cabinets base. Wood blocks are fastened to your floor that will fit in the island cabinets. You just need one woodblock mounted to the floor inside the base of each island cabinet on all the 4 sides.
  3. Then you need to measure a 2" inch by 4"inch board to the length of one measurement which you have taken under the cabinet base and then mark the board by using a pencil. Now cut your board straight across the mark with your hand or with a circular saw. Measure the mark and then cut more 2 by 4 sections to fit inside each side base of each cabinet.
  4. Now you need to measure the thickness of the walls of your cabinet base. Most are approximately a quarter to half-inch thick but the dimensions vary according to the product. Now, mark a second outline on your floor inside with the painter’s tape outline by using a pencil or with the washable marker. The second outline is an adjustment that accounts for the thickness of your base. If your cabinet base walls are half-inch thick then the new traced outline will be a half-inch inside taped outline.
  5. Next, simply place one woodblock on your floor, aligning the outer edge of it with a new outline that you traced on your floor. Use a pencil or marker in order to trace around the block. Repeat this step for each woodblock. Now, move your wood blocks to a work surface. Grab a drill bit of the same diameter as the shank of a 3 1/2 inch wood screw and set it to a power driller.
  6. Now drill 2 holes through each wood block about 2 inches in from each end of your blocks. For the woodblocks that are longer than 8 inches, drill an additional hole but make sure to drill through the center of woodblock. These are pilot holes that will avert splitting your wood when trying to screw the blocks to your floor. Set your wood blocks back on your floor inside the appropriate outlines.
  7. Now fasten the diamond drill (same diameter or slightly larger than the first drill bit) bit to your power drill. Then insert the tip of your diamond bit through one of the holes in your woodblock. Drill through the tile under the woodblock. Repeat this step at each hole in every block of your wood. The diamond bit needs to be cut through the tile only in order to avert breakage. Fasten a head screwdriver (Phillips) bit to your power drill.
  8. Finally drop a 3 1/2-inch screw (wood) into a hole of a woodblock. Tighten all the screws to your floor by using a power drill. Fasten one wood screw in each hole in your every woodblock. Now wipe the washable marker lines off your floor with a rag dampened in water. Then, lift your island cabinets with one helper. Lower your cabinets over the woodblocks and then proceed to finish steps for your island.
