2 Methods & Items Needed To Remove Scratches From Your Laminate Flooring

If you have scratches on your laminate flooring, no matter deep or minor, you can easily remove them from your floor by following the mentioned methods carefully. You need to collect certain items first before going through the methods for both minor as well as deep scratches.

Item List

  • Laminate Touch-Up Kit
  • Fine-Grit Sandpaper
  • Clean Cloths
  • Acetone Or Other Solvent
  • Paper Plate & Putty Knife

Method 1: Removing Minor Scratches

  1. Touch-up Kit: Firstly buy Laminate Repair Kit from Amazon, this kit will help you to remove minor scratches from your laminate flooring.
  2. Marker: Color in minor scratches by using the marker. Depending on your laminate flooring & your kit, this might be enough in order to hide the scratch on the floor.
  3. Pencil Or Crayon: Fill the deeper scratches in you laminate flooring by using the pencil or crayon. The kit also contain putty knife, so use it in order to apply the filler to the scratch on floor.
  4. Sand: Once applied now sand the area softly with sandpaper(fine-grit) to bring the filler level with the laminate floor's surface. You only need to sand enough to remove any extra filler, not enough to scratch your laminate. Wipe the laminate flooring around the repair by using a clean, damp cloth to remove any dust which comes after the sanding process or any leftover excess filler.
  5. Apply: Finally you need to apply the varnish to the minor scratch if indispensable to match the floor's shine. Brush the varnish in a thin line over the minor scratch on your laminate flooring & feather the edges softly for an even finish. Allow this varnish to dry, and then lightly sand it to level with the surface.

Method 2: Removing Deep Scratches

  1. Touch-up Kit: Buy a touch up kit specially designed for deep scratches that should also match the color of your flooring. The kit may contain a seam filler or putty, touch-up marker as well as varnish. You can add shine later by using the varnish.
  2. Ventilation: Give good air circulation to your working area, open windows or doors for ventilation, apply acetone or other solvent to a cloth & use it to clean the deep scratch exhaustively. If your kit specifies a different solvent then you can use that solvent alternatively.
  3. Squeeze: Squeeze some of the filler or putty onto a paper plate. If the substance is an epoxy then you need to mix 2 ingredients in the proportions guided by the manufacturer until the color becomes uniform.
  4. Scoop: Scoop your filler or putty up on putty knife, then scrape it into the deeper scratch. Pull your putty knife across the scratch for a 2nd time, orthogonal to your first stroke.
  5. Rub: Rub your cloth with the applied solvent across the area in order to remove the leftover extra filler or putty. Allow this substance to dry in the scratch for few minutes. If the the putty shrinks as it dries, apply a 2nd coat and allow it to dry.
  6. Sand: Sand the surface gently with sandpaper(fine-grit) until it is smooth. If necessary then touch up the color of the deeper scratch with the help of a marker from your kit. If the scratch isn't as shiny as the rest of the laminate floor, apply a thin coat of varnish on it, when the varnish is dry, sand it smooth.
