How To Refinish Furniture With Paint: Proper Way Of Refinishing Furniture

Proper Way Of Refinishing Furniture With Paint

In order to give your old piece of furniture a new life, it is very important to refinish it with paint or in other words, we cay say simply painting furniture. Painting furniture is a way that will give new life to an older piece of furniture. The proper way of refinishing or painting is mentioned below:

Preparing The Furniture

  1. Remove Hardware: Start the process by removing the hardware from the furniture. Most of the time, the hardware like the knobs, pulls, or other hardware can be easily unscrewed. Removing the hardware before the paint job allows to evenly paint the whole surface, and will also protect the hardware from drips.
  2. Wood Filler: For the wood furniture look for any patch that is chipped, holed or pitted and fill with wood filler. Try to apply the most of the wood filler to the damaged part, and not on the undamaged wood. There can be some overlap of filler, that needs to sand down later. With the help of a putty knife try to scrape away the excess wood filler and let it dry.
  3. Sanding: If there is a large piece of furniture, then save the time as well as effort by using an orbital sander. For the edges, grooves, as well as any other tight spots finish off with a small sanding block, or just by hand sanding. The sanding will help to remove any existing varnish or lacquer finish, making it very easier for the primer coat to adhere strongly.
  4. Cleaning: After the sanding is done then remove any residue left from sanding the furniture surface by simply wiping it gently with the help of a clean tack cloth as this removes the dust and will also leave the surface clean.

Priming

  1. Brush Or Spray: Apply a smooth coat of primer using a brush or spray. The user can use a paint roller for wide-spaced areas, even on the areas of wood surface that are not contoured, and use a paintbrush along with edges, corners, and any harder-to-reach areas. Leave the primer to dry completely before moving on.
  2. Sand The Primed Surface: After the primer is dry then sand the area with a fine-grit sandpaper. This will help the paint bond to the primer strongly. Be sure to clean away any sawdust or residue from the sanding with a tack cloth.
  3. Additional Coats Of Primer: Now apply at least one more coat of primer once the first one is completely dried, and a third coat if required to completely cover all the furniture. It is advisable to sand between the coats lightly.

Painting And Finishing

  1. Apply First Coat: With the help of a foam roller apply thin coat of the paint. Apply over even surfaces of the furniture using a foam roller. The users are advised not to apply too much paint at once. The furniture will look better if the user will apply several light coats instead of a single heavy one.
  2. Apply The Paint With A Brush When the paint is still wet, the user needs to take a brush and then run it over the surface of the furniture, in the long and even strokes. The main use of the brush is to reach the places where rollers cannot reach like the edges and corners. Let the coat dry completely.
  3. Apply A Second Coat: Let the first coat of paint dry completely and then apply it with another coat of the same paint.
  4. Sand Between Coats: After each coat is dry, sand over it lightly with the help of fine-grade sandpaper. The user needs to make sure to remove away any dust with a tack cloth.
  5. Cure For A Few Days: The newly-painted furniture will need some time to sit for a little while after the job is done. Using the furniture early can make the scratches or dings in the finish, so leave the finished furniture for two to three days before using it again.
