How To Protect Acrylic Paint On Wood: Procedure To Protect

Procedure To Protect Acrylic Paint On Wood

Acrylic paint is a water-soluble paint that becomes water resistant after drying. Acrylic paint is made of acrylic polymer emulsion's suspended pigment and the drying time of acrylic paint is very fast. The procedure to protect acrylic paint on wood is as follows:
  1. Clean The Wood:
The first step is to remove loose particles and dirt from the wood by wiping the wood with a damp cloth. The step allows the primer, paint, and sealant to absorb properly. The remaining dirt needs to be wiped down with a tack cloth.
  2. Apply Acrylic Sealant:
After that, the user needs to apply two coats of acrylic sealant such as glossy acrylic medium sealant over the clean wood. First, the user needs to apply a thin coat of sealant over the wood by using a paintbrush or sponge and allow it to dry completely. Then, the user needs to apply a second coat of sealant and allow it to dry as well before sanding the wood surface lightly with 220 grit sandpaper. After sanding, the user needs to wipe down the wood again by using a damp cloth and a tack cloth.
  3. Apply Primer:
Once the wood surface is clean & dry, the user needs to apply a coat of primer over it that should allow the paint to adhere over the wood properly. It has been recommended by the experts to use an acrylic gesso primer and allow the primer to dry and cure as per label instructions.
  4. Apply Acrylic Paint:
Once the primer dries, the user needs to apply two coats of user preferred acrylic paint over the wood surface. It has been recommended by the experts to let the first coat of paint dry properly as per label instructions before applying the second coat of paint. The second coat of paint should be allowed to dry overnight.
  5. Apply Polycrylic Or Wax Based Sealant:
The last step will be to apply a Polycrylic or wax based sealant over the wood surface once the acrylic paint is completely dry. The Polycrylic sealant provides a glossy finish, while the wax-based sealant provides more of a flat finish. Before applying the sealant, it has been recommended by the experts to sand the surface lightly and wipe down the sanding dust. The user needs to apply a sealant coat over the wooden surface by using a paintbrush, cloth, or a sponge. Once the first coat of sealant dies, the user needs to apply a second coat of sealant and allow it to cure the wood for at least 2-3 weeks.
