How To Make Old Wood Look Rustic Using Stain And White Paint?

The new wood can be painted to give it the awesome rustic look to make it more inviting and overwhelming. Here is the easy way to make the old wood look rustic using a stain and white paint.
1.Stain: Use a sponge and apply the matching color stain over the furniture piece entirely.
2.Paper Towels: Use paper towels to wipe the furniture piece.
3.Paint: Once the stain has been wiped Off apply the white paint over it with the help of the semi-dry brush.
4.Restain: Let the paint dry completely and restain it again using a sponge and immediately wipe it with the help of the paper towel.
5.Layering: create the perfect layering using both stain and paint.
6.Sand: Dry the stain and paint and sand the edges or any other area to achieve the old rustic look.
7.Polyurethane: Finish the furniture piece using polyurethane to keep it protected for long.

How To Make Wood Table Look Weathered Naturally?

There are natural ways as well that help us to achieve the wood look rustic naturally. The steps are given below:

Items Required

  • White Vinegar, Steel Wool, Glass Jars
  • Hot water, black tea, and paintbrush
  • Pastewax, sandpaper, and plastic gloves

Directions

1.Sand: Sanding is only required if the table is already painted. Sand the painted piece nicely to make the stain adhere well to it.
2.Prepare Solution: Take the glass jar and fill half of it using vinegar now add the pieces of the steel wool into it. Keep it uncovered for 24 hours. Wait till the solution turns dark. Make sure to avoid rust build up. Allow the vinegar to dissolve the steel wool.
3.Hot Water And Black Tea: Mix the black tea into the hot water and apply it over the table and let it dry. Once dried, the vinegar solution needs to be applied over the table top.
4.Weathered Look: The table will give the weathered/ aged look once it dries. Go for the second coat once the first coat dries completely.

Grey

To give the grey rustic look to the furniture follow the steps mentioned below:

Things Required

  • Sandpaper, Staining Rag
  • Minwax Dark Walnut Stain, White Paint, Water

Steps To Follow

1.Surface Preparing: Prepare the wood surfaces finely so that it will adhere the stain well.
2.Stain: The piece needs to be stained using pre-stained wood conditioner and Dark Walnut stain coat.
3.Allow To Dry: Let both stains dry completely.
4.White Wash Paint Mixture: Mix equal parts of the paint and water ( 1 part of water and 1 part paint both). Make sure to keep the wash thicker and avoid adding more water to it.
5.Application: Use a paintbrush to apply the whitewash mix. Apply the paint in long strokes to achieve the desired results. Once the first coat is done allow it to stay there for 3-5 seconds.
6.Staining Rag: The painted surface needs to be rubbed using staining rag and let it dry completely.
7.Distress: The distressing of the wood needs to be done with the sandpaper to get the rustic grey wood look. Alternatively, poly or wax coat can be applied over the surface if desired as it is optional but not important.
