General Overview

The dark stained wood color can be lightened using some easy steps with the help of the oil-based solvents. The oil-based solvents are ultimate to remove the dark stain from the hardwood and follow up by applying the light stain so that the wood will look lighter stain. Alternatively, the softwoods can be treated with the liquid coating to make them look lighter.

Possible Ways to Lighten the Dark Wood

  1. Sanding: The first step is to use electric sander in order to eliminate the polyurethane finish coating from the surface. Use only 50 sandpaper in electric sander to get the perfect job done. Make sure, to do the sanding properly in the direction of the grain only to avoid the possibility of the damage.
  2. Re-Sanding: Once wipe the surface than re-sand it using the 100 grit sandpaper.
  3. Clean: Clean all the residue using the gauze.
  4. Solvent: Pour the solvent over the nylon pad and wipe the wood with the same to make it look lighter. Continue till the wood will give a clear appearance.
  5. Wait: Prior proceeding further waiting for nearly an hour after application of the solvent is recommended until it gets evaporated.
  6. Gel Paint: The next step is to apply the clear gel paint over the surface using a high-quality wood brush and follow up by removing same immediately using rag cloth.
  7. Mineral Spirits: Apply mineral spirits over the floor and allow it to dry.
  8. Sealant: The application of the polyurethane sealant is required over the surface. The sealant must be applied with the help of the natural brush in the direction of the grain. Allow the sealer to dry for approximately two hours.
