How To Hide Laminate Edge: Step By Step Process Of Hiding Laminate Countertop Seam

Step By Step Process Of Hiding Laminate Countertop Seam

Laminate countertops are usually composed of 12-foot lengths. So, if you have a longer countertop, then it is important to add another section, which creates a seam. Seams can also happen in corners where two sections of countertop join in order to produce an L shape. Laminate countertops are regarded as one of the best options if you are looking for something with low cost as well as low maintenance. The surface of the laminate is impenetrable & waterproof, as a result of which it does not harbor bacteria. However, they are famous or well known for seams. In order to hide the seams in laminate countertops, the best way is to fill them. There are several types of seam fillers from which you can select the seam of your choice. Selecting a color to match your laminate will create a perfect finish, which makes the seams disappear.

Step 1: Scrape Out The Seams & Brush Away The Debris

First of all, using the edge of your putty knife, you can easily scrape out the seams, & then get rid of the debris when finished. Pour a little bit of acetone on a clean rag before wiping down each seam. Any food or dirt that remains in the seams will keep away the seam filler from properly adhering.

Step 2: Apply Small Amount Of Seam Filler

The next step is to spread a little bit of seam filler on the plastic plate. Use your putty knife in order to combine or put together the filler as long as the color is consistent. Scoop putty onto the edge of your putty knife before dragging the knife through the seam. Repeat this step as long as the seam is filled. Seam filler will shrink as it dries, therefore, you may need more than one application in order to completely fill the seam.

Step 3: Scrape Excess Filler Off The Countertop

Finally, you need to scrape excess filler off the countertop with the help of a putty knife. Hold the putty knife flat on the surface before scraping toward the seam. Do not scrape through the top of the seam otherwise you may mistakenly remove filler from the seam. Brush away the dried filler before dampening a clean rag with acetone. Use the rag in order to clean the area around the seams.

Step 4: Apply A Fresh Coat Of Paint

If your edging is fundamentally sound, however, it is stained or yellowing, it becomes important to update it, which can be done simply by painting it. You will need to sand the laminate in order to rough it up so that the paint can adhere to it. Apply a coat of primer before allowing it to cure completely & then apply the first coat of paint. Entirely dependent on the color you select, you may need to apply several coats of paint. Finish the process by adding a coat or two of sealer when it comes to protecting the countertop. There is no need to paint your whole countertop simply to update the trim. Instead, you can get paint custom-colored in order to match your laminate and then paint only the edge.
