How To Get Cat Pee Out Of Mattress: Steps To Remove

Steps to Remove/Get Cat Pee out Of Mattress

The smell of cat pee is so bad that it can cause respiratory problems. In case, the cat has an accident on to the mattress, the user doesn't need to worry as he can get the pee along with its smell out of mattress by following the below-given steps:
  1. Absorb Excess Wet Pee:
While the pee mark is fresh and wet, the user needs to press it with paper towels to absorb excess wet pee. It has been recommended to absorb as much wet pee as possible from the mark. If required, the user can replace a wet towel with a dry towel and once the towel comes out dry, the step should stop immediately.
  2. Take The Mattress Outside:
After that, the user needs to take the mattress outside but the step is only recommended during warm and dry weather conditions. The user needs to place the mattress on a clean table or else he can place a plastic sheet underneath the mattress. The step will help the mattress to soak water & cleaner quickly and will also increase its drying speed.
  3. Protect Box Spring:
During rainy, snowy, and cold weather conditions, the user has to keep the mattress inside on the bed but underneath the mattress, he has to place a plastic sheet. Also, the user needs to place two towels under the mattress just below the pee mark. The towels and the plastic sheet will protect the box spring from getting water damages.
  4. Soak The Pee Area With Water:
The next step will be to pour some water on to the pee area, the water should be of room temperature. The user needs to make sure that he pours the water on to the pee area only rather than soaking the entire mattress. The step helps to dilute the pee and also reduce its smell.
  5. Absorb Excess Moisture:
After that, the user needs to absorb excess moisture from the pee area by pressing paper towels on to it. If necessary, the user can replace a wet towel with a dry towel. The step should continue until the towel comes out dry when pressed on the pee area. Apart from that, the user needs to replace wet towels underneath the mattress with the dried ones.
  6. Select Cleaner:
The next step in the process is to select a suitable cleaner for cleaning cat pee stain. There are several cleaners available in the market with which the user can clean the cat pee stain from the mattress. It has been recommended by the experts to use enzyme cleaners for the process as they are specifically designed to break down blood and pee stains. Also, the user can prepare homemade cleaner by mixing water and vinegar in equal parts or by mixing water and hydrogen peroxide in equal parts.
  7. Use Cleaner On The Stain:
After that, the user needs to pour the selected cleaner directly on the stained area. The user needs to make sure that he pours the cleaner on to the entire stain rather than spraying it. Spraying doesn't allow the cleaner to penetrate deeply into the stained area and won't remove all the pee traces.
  8. Let The Cleaner Soak Into The Stain:
The next step will be to wait for at least 15 minutes so that the cleaner soaks into the mattress. The step helps the cleaner to penetrate deeper and break down the pee stain.
  9. Absorb Excess Cleaner:
After 15 minutes, the user needs to absorb excess cleaner from the stained area by using fresh towels. It has been recommended to press the towels on to the stained area of the mattress in order to absorb excess pee, water, and cleaner. The user needs to continue the step until the entire moisture is absorbed from the area.
  10. Use Baking Soda:
The next step will be to sprinkle some baking soda over the wet spot on the mattress. The step will get more moisture out of the wet spot and will also pull out cleaner & pee odor from the mattress.
  11. Allow The Cleaner Air Dry:
It is necessary for the user to let the mattress air dry as it will help the cleaner to break down the pee and will eventually clean the mattress completely. In case, the mattress is played outside, the user needs to leave it there to dry up. The dry up area should be clean and protected from the rain. In case, the mattress is placed inside, the user can point a fan towards the wet spot in order to speed up its drying time. It usually takes 2-3 days for the mattress to dry up completely. If the user wants to sleep on the mattress before it gets dry, he needs to place two towels and a plastic bag respectively on the wet spot which he has to remove in the morning to let the mattress air dry again.
  12. Remove Baking Soda:
The last step in the process will be to remove the sprinkled baking soda from the mattress either by sweeping or brushing. It has been recommended by the experts to remove baking soda once it has absorbed the liquid it can. The tools recommended for the step are brush and broom. In case, the affected area is still wet, the user needs to sprinkle more baking soda into it to draw out more and more moisture from the area.
