If you want to get a glass-like finish on your wood then you just need to collect all the given items and you have to follow all the given steps to finish this task without wasting your precious time. Here is the list of required items and steps for this process:

Things You Will Need

  • Aluminum Oxide Sandpaper, 150-, 220-, 320- And 400-grit
  • Dry Cloths
  • Wood Grain Filler
  • Paintbrush
  • Plastic Paint Scraper
  • Lacquer Or Varnish
  • Spray Equipment Or Paintbrush
  • Silicon Carbide Sandpaper, 400-, 600-, 800-, 1000- And 1200-grit
  • 4F Pumice
  • Cotton Buffing Cloths

Steps For This Process

  • First of all, you need to sand your bare wood in order to smooth it and then get rid of the old finish from it. Complete your sanding process by the hand with 150 grit sandpaper(aluminum oxide), go according to the grain of your wood and then you need to wipe the dust, which comes after sanding process, with a dry cloth.
  • Fill the grain of the wood with some oil or wood grain filler(water-based). This step is important if your wood is an open-grained variety, like oak but it makes it easier to get the glass-like finish on your wood.
  • Apply the wood filler with your paintbrush and then scrape it flat with the help of a plastic paint scraper & then let it dry for few hours. Sand it flat by your hand with sandpaper(220-grit), go according to the grain of your wood.
  • Next, you need to spray one coat of lacquer. You can easily brush or spray a coat of your varnish. Wait for at least a few minutes because this type of lacquer requires about 20 minutes, but the varnish may need up to 1-20 hours. Sand the applied lacquer or varnish by your hand with sandpaper(320-grit) & wipe off sanding dust.
  • Next, apply one more coat of your varnish. If you are going to spray lacquer then you need to apply 2 more coats, sand the first coat before applying the next.
  • Now, apply another wet coat of varnish. If you are using the lacquer, apply 3 more coats and sand each coat with sandpaper(400 grit) before applying the next. Give all the finished time to fully dry before rubbing them. Lacquer will take about a week and varnish takes two weeks.
  • Wet-sand your wood surface with the help of silicon carbide sandpaper and use water as a lubricant. Start your work with sandpaper(400 grit) to knock down gross imperfections and then sand the entire surface with sandpaper(600 grit). Rub the surface of wood until it shows a uniform dull sheen. Repeat this procedure with 800-1000 and 1200 grit sandpaper.
  • This is your final step of this process, sprinkle the 4F pumice on your wood and then spray some water or some rubbing oil on it and then you have to buff up the finish by using a cotton cloth. You will easily get a full gloss finish with a power buffer.
