Steps And Item Needed To Fix The Polyurethane Mistakes

Here are the item list and some steps to fix the polyurethane mistake yourself. Simply collect all the items and start your work without wasting your precious time:

Things You Will Need For This Process

  • Paintbrush
  • 100- And 220-Grit Sandpaper
  • Razor Blade
  • Pull Scraper
  • Mineral Spirits
  • Water
  • Leveling Agent
  • Oscillating Tool
  • Sanding Accessory

Steps For This Process

Here are the steps to fix the polyurethane mistake:
  • First of all, you have to pop bubbles that mostly appear during spraying as well as painting process of polyurethane with the help of the tip of a paintbrush. The bubbles can be caused by paintbrush turbulence or by the moisture released by the substrate. You can easily avert them from forming by brushing slowly or, since off-gassing is more possible in hot days, apply the polyurethane finish in moderate temperatures.
  • Next you have to flatten bubbles (hardened finish) by using the sandpaper(220 grit) & then recoat them.
  • Now, you need to sand the cracked or checked finish with sandpaper(220 grit) & then recoat it. This type of defect will appear when you try to spread a thick coat on a hot day & also it dries too quickly. After flattening the affected area with 220 grit sandpaper, you need to wait until the temperature drops and then spread a thinner coat.
  • Now you need to wait for the drips to dry, earlier you scrape them off with the help of a razor blade or you can also sand them with sandpaper (220 grit) & recoat.
  • Next you have to scrape the finish from the horizontal surface with the help of a pull scraper while it is wet & wash the surface by using a solvent if the finish begins to separate & form into beads. You can also use mineral spirits if applying the solvent-based product & water for a water-based one.
  • This type of defect is almost caused by silicone in the substrate left by furniture polish or furniture wax. There is no easy and simple way to remove silicone from the wood surface, but you may be able to remove them by the sanding process. Add a leveling agent to your polyurethane to avert the same thing from happening when you try to recoat.
  • You need to remove the finish with the help of an oscillating tool, the sanding accessory & sandpaper (100 grit) if the finish turns cloudy after the finish hardens. This type of defect is known as blushing, which is the result of moisture in your wood & likely occurs when you use a solvent-based product.
  • You will see it common with lacquer rather than polyurethane. If you see that the conditions of the weather outside are hot and humid and still your wood is wet then it can happen. After finishing your wood you have given it a good time to dry before applying another coat.

Tips & Warning

Here are some tips & warning for this process:
  • Tip 1: When the polyurethane is dried tack free then it's time to recoat the polyurethane. It may take from 1-2 hours, depends on the selected product which you are using & before it cures, which is usually betwixt 24-48 hours.
  • Tip 2: You need to always sand lightly and sand the old coat before applying a fresh one over it. This ensures adhesion & also improves the overall finish of your wood.
  • Warning: You need to wear the respirator when painting or spraying solvent-based polyurethane & then keep the workspace well-ventilated.
