Steps To Distress Painted Wood Furniture Using Sandpaper

Distressing is a technique by which the customer can give a new look to the wooden furniture product. The material required to distress the painted wooden furniture with sandpaper includes paint brushes, sandpaper, steel wool, polyurethane, rags, drop cloths, and paint. The steps are mentioned below:
  1. Prepare Your Space: The first step is to lay the furniture piece in the safe area and remove the hardware components from the wooden furniture piece.
  2. Sand And Clean The Piece: Sand the entire surface and sharp edges and corners of the wooden furniture. Then clean the sanded dust particles from the furniture by using a clean rag.
  3. Paint The Piece: Now apply two coats of paint on the furniture. The first coat should be a lighter color and another coat should be a darker color. Wait until it dries.
  4. Distress The Piece With Sandpaper: Now remove the paint by scratching the surface of furniture and distress the furniture by using sandpaper and steel wool.
  5. Apply A Stain: To give an antique look to the wooden furniture piece a coat of stain can be applied on the surface of furniture in a straight direction and leave the stain to dry.
  6. Protect The Finished Piece With Polyurethane: To protect the finished surface of the wooden furniture a clear coat of polyurethane can be applied to seal the furniture surface. Then all the hardware components are installed back on the furniture piece.
