How To Clean A Couch Without A Steam Cleaner: Two Easy Methods To Clean A Couch

Two Easy Methods To Clean A Couch Without A Steam Cleaner

If you have an old couch at your home and you want to make it look new again, then you need to clean it regularly. In order to clean your couch without using a steam cleaner, go through one of the two methods mentioned below:

Method 1: Spot Cleaning

  • Before cleaning your couch, you first need to read the care instructions of your couch, check for the tag because the tag will tell you what kind of cleaner or solvent you can use on your couch. If your couch is machine washable then you can use water on it, if not then you need to use something else such as vinegar or alcohol.
  • Check for the tags- W means you can use water, S means you need to use vinegar, rubbing alcohol, or another commercial dry cleaning agent for this type of couch, X means you need to use a vacuum and professional cleaning only.
  • After choosing the suitable method for your type of couch, blot up any fresh spills from your couch. No matter which kind of couch you have, it is very important to get the spills up in the right way. Simply use your cleaner to dab at the affected area of the spill until you have picked up as much as possible of the fresh spill.
  • You can also vacuum your couch if there is any loose debris. Crumbs & the other type of debris sometimes fall into the couch. If you ignore or leave them on your couch then they will get crushed into the couch fabric when you do the spot cleaning process.
  • You can also use dish soap and water mixture on any type of stain only if the couch fabric is able to handle water. Also, mix a few drops of your dish soap with cool water. Grab a sponge in this mixture and then wring it out. Dab at the stain affected area or spill with your sponge for few minutes until it's wholly lifted.
  • You need to blot the stains by using the vinegar or alcohol if your couch can't handle water. If the couch has an "S" on the couch tag then you may be able to use vinegar or alcohol. Dip your cloth in either alcohol or vinegar and then you need to dab the cloth at the stains until it disappears wholly. Let the applied solution dry on your fabric.
  • You can also try the baby wipes for spills on the microfiber couches. The microfiber type of fabric is very easy to clean. If you have spilled on your couch then blot it up by using the clean baby wipe. Keep dabbing at couch fabric until the spill is entirely gone from the couch. Take another clean baby wipe if needed.

Method 2: Deep Cleaning

  • First of all, vacuum your couch across all the cushions in order to get up any type of dust & the dead skin cells. Lift your cushions to vacuum all the debris & the dust underneath them.
  • Simple way, you just need to sprinkle some baking soda to deal with the odors. Pull all the cushions off from your couch. You just need to put the baking soda in your salt shaker & then sprinkle it over the entire couch, including the couch cushions. Leave this baking soda on for 1-2 hours and then vacuum it up.
  • Do spot treatments for any type of stains on your sofa. If your sofa has stains such as wine, ink, blood or any other difficult to remove the substance, then you just need to use the spot cleaning treatment on your sofa first. Spray on the stain affected area of your sofa and then leave it according to the suggested time on the bottle and then blot up the applied cleaner on the couch with the help of a clean cloth or with a paper towel. Always avert rubbing the stain affected area around with the brush or with the cloth as this will spread it.
  • You can also you the vinegar mixture for a natural solution on the couch fabrics that can handle water you just need to mix together 0.75 cups which means 180ml of clean water and 0.25 cups (59ml) of white vinegar, and 0.5(7.4ml) tbsp of liquid dish soap. Shake this mixture lightly to mix it up and then you need to use a scrubbing brush to rub this mixture into the couch fabric. Once you've done with the entire couch then scrub in plain water until you don't see any type of suds anymore.
  • This is the final way to clean the couch without using the steam cleaner, try an upholstery cleaner (non-steam type) for deep cleaning your couch that takes water. Take all the cushions off from the couch to make this step much easier. Carefully read the manufacturer's instructions for using the upholstery cleaner.
