How To Hang Heavy Objects From Ceiling: 2 Methods To Hang Objects

2 Methods To Hang Very Heavy Objects From The Ceiling

If you are a lover of decorative items and want to hang something special from your ceiling such as ceiling fan, then you need to try to hang your selected object from your ceiling joist and with the help of a lag bolt because the lag bolts have very deep grooves in the threads for allowing the maximum grip. If you are facing to secure your heavy objects by using your joist then you can follow another method called toggle bolt. The toggle bolt uses a large foldable nut to increase the clamping pressure of the toggle bolt. A toggle bolt is commonly used for lamping any heavy objects to Kath or drywall. If you are going to do this task then the given 2 methods can help you to finish your work without wasting your precious time.

Method 1: Lag Bolts

Here are the steps for using lag bolts:
  • The first thing for this project is to locate the joist with the help of a stud finder and then mark the center of the joist by using a pencil.
  • Next, place the mounting (bracket) for the object over your pencil line and then center it on the joist.
  • Now this time mark the mounting holes with the help of a pencil.
  • Next, drill pilot holes there by using the pencil marks as your guide. You need to drill the hole approximately 1/2 the diameter of your lag bolt. Be careful while doing this because the correct size is necessary.
  • Finally place the mounting bracket over the drilled holes and then thread the lag bolts in as far as you can do with your hands, also use a ratchet or socket to drive your lag bolts through the rest of your wall into the joist.

Method 2: Toggle Bolts

Here are the steps for using toggle bolts:
  • Firstly, inspect the surface of your butterfly toggle nut. On the surface of your toggle bolt, a number can be found. That number will indicate the drill size that you need to drill the access hole in your wall. Here is the example for a 1/2-inch toggle bolt, you probable need to drill a 3/4-inch hole.
  • Once done then place your mounting bracket against your ceiling and then mark all the holes by using a marker.
  • Next, drill the access holes with help of an electric hand driller and a drill bit. Try to avoid any possible damage of your body, wear eye goggles and face mask.
  • Now, the first thing is to remove the butterfly toggle nut from your bolt and then place your bolts through the mounting bracket and then place your butterfly toggle nut back onto your bolt. Be sure that the bolt is long enough to allow your butterfly toggle bolt enough room to collapse over your bolt. You should have at least 1/40-inch betwixt the ends of your butterfly toggle nut(collapsed) and the back of your mounting bracket because this will allow space for the thickness of your ceiling.
  • Finally, place your butterfly toggle bolts through the access holes in your wall. Once your bolts in the wall, the nuts will open up itself. Tighten all the screws with the help of a screwdriver.
