  2. Measure The Length: Now, you have to measure the length of each stud that runs across your ceiling. Also, measure the width of 1 joist from the top, where it sits facing the ceiling, to the bottom, which hangs into your room. Ceiling joists ordinarily measure six or eight inches wide.
  3. Add: Next, add the number of inches by which you would like to lower your ceiling to the thickness of the ceiling joist & get wood boards in the same size. If you have 8-inch joists, for occurrence, and want to lower a ceiling by 4 inches then you need to get 12-inch-wide boards.
  4. Wood Boards: You can now, cut your new wood boards down to the same dimension as the joists in the ceiling by using a circular saw. Make the same number of joists as those already installed on your room ceiling.
  5. New Joists: Next, hang the new stud that you cut for your ceiling as near to the old stud as possible; make sure that the new stud line up with a wall stud. Attach the new stud to the old studs with joist hangers.
  6. Cover The Ceiling: This is your final step, simply put the paneling back over the new studs or you can also install some new drywall panels. Cover your ceiling with any type of coverage that you want.
