How To Whitewash Pallet Wood: 12 Easy Steps

12 Easy Steps To Whitewash Wood

Whitewashing your wooden furniture is the best way to revive your old piece of wooden furniture while keeping your wood grain easily visible. If you want to whitewash your wood yourself, for example, pallet wood, then you just need to follow all the given steps carefully and achieve the desired result of your task:
  1. First of all, lay a drop cloth on the floor before placing your wooden furniture on it. If drop cloth is not available then you can also use a newspaper or any other material which can catch the drips.
  2. Then remove any old sealant by using a chemical stripper. If your wooden furniture is covered with sealant then you need to remove it with a chemical stripper because it will remove the sealant much faster than the sandpaper.
  3. After that, wash your furniture with vinegar & water. Simply you need to dilute white vinegar with the same amount of water and then use this mixture to wash your wooden furniture.
  4. This vinegar solution is very effective for removing any stains and the dirt which could cause your whitewash to apply haphazardly. Treating your wood this way may also enhance the wood's ability to absorb the whitewash better.
  5. Now start sanding your furniture, just grab sandpaper (medium or fine grit) or a sander to rub the wood surface for whitewashing and will give your wood an even texture and will also make the whitewash attach strongly & evenly.
  6. Next clean the dust which comes after the sanding process with a clean cloth in order to get the clean surface.
  7. Then you need to buy the whitewash mixture. You can buy the whitewash readymade as whitewash pickling or as a wood stain.
  8. Next, apply the whitewash to your furniture. You need to use the foam roller, paintbrush or clean rag and apply in long strokes to the surface of your furniture. As the whitewash dry more quickly as compared to standard paint, apply your whitewash in small sections rather than applying it to the entire furniture surface.
  9. You may need to work whitewash into your wood but this is optional. Before the applied whitewash dries, you need to use a clean rag to rub the applied whitewash according to the wood grain and knots of your wood & even with the brush strokes into one level coating.
  10. Next you need to wipe the area that has been whitewashed. Before the whitewash can entirely dry, simply use a clean cloth to wipe any extra whitewash from your furniture surface because this will help to make your wood grain more visible through with the product.
  11. You can also add additional layers if you like. Applying the additional layers will create a thicker layer that camouflage more of your wood grain. This additional process makes it easy to create the exact consolidation of color and the wood grain and this is right for your project.
  12. Finally you can also seal the whitewashed furniture. After the whitewashing is wholly dried, now apply a clear water-based sealant over the furniture surface and this will also protect the whitewash and allow it to fresh & new look for a long period of time. Most types of sealants can be easily applied by using a brush or by using an even lint-free sponge.
