Step By Step Instructions Of Dyeing Carpet With Rit Dye

With the passage of time, the carpeting of your home is prone to get damaged from ordinary use, spills as well as fading from the light of the sun. In fact, a high-quality carpet will start to show wear after a while. Instead of replacing your carpet, which can be very expensive, you can renovate & restore it by covering the stains and wear with dye. If you are looking to dye your carpet, the best option is to hire a professional to do this task. However, you can also dye your carpet yourself provided you follow the right technique & use the right tools.

Things You Will Need

  • Carpet Shampoo
  • Carpet Shampooer
  • Mineral Oil
  • Thin Plastic Sheeting
  • Rit Brand Fabric Dye
  • Scrap Piece Of Carpet & Tape

Steps

  1. Find Out The Carpet Material: First of all, you need to ascertain or establish the material of your carpet. Dye works very differently on cotton in comparison to a high nylon-fiber synthetic or stain-resistant material. Polyester carpets will not soak up fabric dye of any kind.
  2. Decide The Color Of A New Carpet: Now, determine the color of your new carpet, but keep in mind that you can dye darker but not lighter, regardless of how much bleach you use. After that, remove all the furniture from the room and keep it outside the room at a safe place.
  3. Vacuum & Shampoo The Carpet: Vacuum as well as shampoo the carpet. Allow it to dry completely, before vacuuming it again. Clean carpet will soak up dye more evenly. Treat the baseboards as well as lower walls with mineral oil, which will go down easily and take dye splatters with it, or tape plastic sheeting to them.
  4. Mix Carpet Dye With Warm Water: Combine or put together the carpet dye with warm water, but make sure the proportion allows for enough mix in order to coat the whole carpet rigorously and sink to the bottom of the fibers. Start with 1 gallon of hot water betwixt 140 F and 160 F. Stir in 1 tbsp. of Rit powdered dye, or 1 1/2 tsp. of liquid dye. Examine the color on a scrap of carpet, both for color as well as for practice. This is very important, both in determining whether your carpet will take fabric dye at all and as a standard of what you final color will be. Allow the sample dry completely, preferably overnight.
  5. Turn On The Lights Or Open The Shades: Turn on the lights or open the shades in order to make sure that you have plenty of light. Coat the carpet rigorously and equally with the dye, using a paint sprayer or a sponge mop. Start with the corner by a great distance from the door and back yourself out of the room, using short strokes. Do not repeat areas otherwise you might end up with a dark spot.
  6. Wipe Splashes Of The Walls Or Baseboards: Clean the splashes of the walls or baseboards immediately as you work, even if you have covered them properly. Allow the carpet to dry for nearly 24 hours before you move back the furniture into the room.
