Steps To Chalk Paint & Distress Furniture With Vaseline

Are you bored with the old look of your furniture and want to give new life and antique look to your old furniture then follow these given steps carefully. These steps will help you to distress your old furniture with chalk paint and Vaseline.
  1. Area: The suitable temperature for this work is 16–27 °C (60–80 °F), if your surrounding temperature is suitable then work outside, if not then start your work in room temperature.
  2. Cover: Before painting and distressing the furniture, cover the surrounding area and items with a canvas sheet or tarp.
  3. Remove: If there is any type of hardware installed on your furniture then remove them before the painting process. If you are not able to remove hardware from furniture then cover them with a painter's tape.
  4. Sanding: Take finer sandpaper (150-grit) and lightly rub your selected furniture, avoid applying too much pressure because it will damage the surface of your furniture. After your sanding process if finished clean the surface of the wood furniture with a soapy water solution to remove small dust and other particles.
  5. Painting: Start your painting process now, take enough chalk paint and use long flexible china bristles brush, foam roller brush, or with the spray gun. Apply a second coat of your chalk paint if necessary.
  6. Dry: After applying the paint, now let the furniture dry for about 24 hours.
  7. Apply Vaseline: Use your fingers in order to apply Vaseline to the areas of the surface where you want the base coat to show through. If you don’t like the feel of petroleum jelly on your fingers, use a small paintbrush instead. Also note that it spreads easily, so make sure you choose the areas carefully and don't use too much. Apply the Vaseline to the different sections, edges, as well as corners of your piece and to the areas around pulls and handles. Once you've finished covering all of the areas you want distressed, use your paintbrush to spread the topcoat over the entire piece. Allow enough time for the paint to dry thoroughly and, if necessary, apply a second coat.
  8. Distressing Process: Once your chalk paint is dry, take a bucket of water and a scouring pad (kitchen scrubby) or lint-free rag. Your cloth should be nice and wet but not too wet. Use the wet rag cloth to gently rub across the wood furniture in a back & forth motion.
