2 Easy Methods And Items Needed To Decoupage A Table

Here are the methods and steps to decoupage a table without wasting your precious time. But before starting the process collect certain items that are required to perform this task:

Items Needed

  • Small, Wooden Table
  • Wrapping Paper, Scrapbooking Paper, Fabric, etc
  • Sharp Scissors
  • Foam Brushes
  • Decoupage Glue
  • Topcoat
  • Fine-Grit Sanding Block

Method 1: Preparing The Table

After collecting all the required items, here are the steps for preparing your table for the decoupaging process:
  1. Choose A Wooden Table: First of all, select a wooden table of your choice for the decoupage process, that means choose that type of wooden table which you do not mind ruining. Stained, beaten, old, and scuffed-up wooden tables are best for this project. Metal tables are not suggested because they are likely to chip later on.
  2. Sand The Table: If your selected wooden table is made from raw wood & not the negligible bit shiny, or it is already shiny then skip this step because the shiny table has topcoat, which can purpose the decoupage to come off. If the table has a top coat then sand your table down with medium-grit sandpaper.
  3. Wipe The Table: Now wipe your table down by using a damp cloth. Dip your soft cloth in some warm water and then squeeze out any extra water. Wipe it crosswise the surfaces that you've sanded before because this will remove any grit or dust.
  4. Paint The Table: Now you need to paint your wooden table if you desired. Start your work by painting all the sides & legs of the table. If you are going to cover the entire tabletop with paper then leave the tabletop bare. Let this paint dry for a few hours and then again apply another coat of the paint and then let the paint dry entirely. Acrylic paint is the best option for this process.
  5. Gather And Prepare: Gather & prepare the paper like this can be done by covering your entire table by using a large sheet of colorful wrapping paper or with fabric. You can also cut some smaller shapes out of scrapbooking paper & decoupage it over the tabletop bare, painted bare or paper-covered tabletop.

Method 2: Decoupaging The Table

Here are the steps for this decoupaging table method:
  1. Apply Decoupage Glue: After following the previous method of preparing the table, now you have to apply some glue (decoupage) to your table with the help of a sponge brush. Only apply this glue where you are going to apply your selected paper. This paper could be the whole tabletop or just patches.
  2. Apply More Decoupage Glue: You now need to apply some more decoupage glue to the back of your paper. Flip your selected paper over to that, the back of your paper is facing towards you. Coat the back of your paper by using the decoupage glue & by using a foam brush.
  3. Place The Paper: Next, you need to place your paper on the table topsides and legs but do not press it down just yet. Be sure that the paper is placed exactly where you want it to be. If the placement is off then carefully nudge the paper back into the place.
  4. Smooth The Paper Down: Next, smooth your paper down, work from the middle of your selected table to the outer edges. You can also smooth your paper down with the help of a ruler, a credit card, or even with a clean foam roller. Some special smoothing tools are also available in hardware stores.
  5. Dry: Now it's time to leave the paper for drying, before applying another layer of decoupage glue. Let the paper dry for at least 30-40 minutes first. Next, you have to apply a coat of decoupage glue by using a foam brush. Apply the decoupage glue starting from the center of your paper & work your way apparent towards the edges.
  6. Sand The Edges: Now you need to sand the edges of your wooden table by using a fine-grit sanding block, if necessary. You only need this if you've covered your entire tabletop with selected paper. Next, run your sanding block back & forth across the top edges of your table because this helps you to saw off the excess paper. Abandon any paper which falls off.
  7. Apply Second Coat: You finally need to apply a second coat of decoupage glue. Do the same technique as you do before, apply the decoupage glue with the help of a foam sponge, work the way from center-out. Now, let the decoupage glue dry completely before moving on.
