How To Apply Varnish Without Brush Marks: Two Easy Parts For Applying Varnish

Two Easy Parts For Applying Varnish Without Brush Marks

By applying the layer of the varnish the users can easily add an elegant finish to any wood furnishing items but the users need to make sure to sand down the pre-existing finish of the wood item so as to expose the bare wood. The users also require to apply the varnish in many thin coats and allow each coat to get dried off completely before applying the coat of varnish. The users can easily apply varnish without brush marks at home by going through the below-mentioned parts with steps:

Part I- Preparing The Wood

  • Sand: The users need to start by sanding down their wood item so that they will be able to detach any blemishes or the imperfections over the wood surface before applying the varnish layer. The users are advised to use the fine-grit sandpaper for the roughened wood pieces and they work along the grain direction of the wood. They need to keep on sanding gently till the surface of the wood item gets smoothened.
  • Clean Workspace: Then they need to clean up their workspace as the varnish is a very durable and beautiful finish but it easily attracts the debris and other dust particles when it gets dried off. The users are advised to apply varnish to the wood piece in a clean place.
  • Collect Items: Then they need to gather their varnish supplies like a paintbrush, measuring cup, stirring stick, paint thinner, respirator, and the hand gloves as well.
  • Stir Varnish: Then users need to carefully stir the varnish and they are advised to avoid shaking up the varnish container. They need to work gently so that they won't add the air bubbles to the varnish.
  • Paint Thinner: Before applying the varnish the users need to thin their varnish by adding the paint thinner directly to it and then carefully stir the varnish.

Part II- Applying The Varnish

  • Protection: Before applying the varnish the users are advised to wear the respirator and the hand gloves so as to protect themselves from breathing in the fumes and varnish spills as well. Then Start by brushing the varnish lightly over the surface of the wood item and to do so they need to dip the brush tip into the mixture of the varnish and then apply it over the wood item. They are advised to work in the wood grain direction and not in the back and forth direction. Start applying the varnish in one edge of the wood item and then work across it till the users apply the varnish over the entire surface of the wood item.
  • Tip Off: Then they need to tip off the wood surface when the varnish is not completely dried as tipping off helps in smoothening the varnish layer and helps in preventing the streaks and the air bubbles. They need to hold up the paintbrush at the right angle over the wood surface and then brush down the brush tip over the entire varnish area of the wood item but work only in the wood grain direction.
  • Apply: Then the users need to apply the two layers of the varnish, then gently sand down the first layer before applying the other layer. They need to allow each varnish layer to get dried off completely before applying another layer. The light weighted furnishing items may require only one coat of the varnish while the heavy furnishing items require almost 2-3 coats of the varnish. The users are advised to allow the wood items to get dried off for almost a week before using that wood item respectively.
