Technically, Exterior Varnish or Urethane is a type of varnish that builds a protective layer on top of the wood. The varnish provides extra durability & protection than the above-mentioned oil finish. The varnish protects the outdoor wood furniture from UV radiation and moisture. For lustrous finish and maximum protection, it has been recommended by the manufacturer to use eight coats of it with light sanding between each coat. - Epoxy With Exterior Varnish:
The most durable finish for outdoor wood furniture is an epoxy sealer top coated with an exterior varnish. The finish is mostly used by the boat builders which gives a perfect impression about the durability of the finish. Due to the use of epoxy sealer, the wood gets protection from shrinking and swelling whereas exterior varnish provides UV protection. The user needs to apply three coats of epoxy sealer after small intervals. He can recoat while the previous coat is soft but not sticky.
