How To Fix Chipped Paint On Window Sill: Instructions Of Fixing Chipped Paint On Window Sill

Step By Step Instructions Of Fixing Chipped Paint On Window Sill

As soon as you notice that the paint starts to fail on your windowsill, it is important to check the moisture content in your home. Peeling paint could be one of the bigger problems where you have excessive moisture content. You need to be sure that the vents are open and use fans in order to keep the air circulating inside the house. Apply a stain-blocking, oil-based primer to the windowsill before you apply a top-quality enamel paint in order to give it a new lease on life.

Thing's You Will Need

  • Putty Knife & Wire Brush
  • Paint Scraper Or 5-In-1 Tool
  • Sander With Fine-Grit Sandpaper
  • Paintbrush
  • Wood Filler & Primer

Step By Step Instructions

  1. Scrape Away The Loose Edges: With the help of a paint scraper or 5-in-1 tool, remove or get rid of the loose edges of the painted area. Stop as soon as it becomes too difficult to pry away the paint. Also, make sure not to make a groove, hole, or indentation or damage the wood with the sharp edges of the scraper.
  2. Remove The Loose Paint By Brushing: Using a wire brush, strenuously sweep away remaining debris from the area. Work the edges of the spoiled or destroyed area once again. If more paint begins to peel, then you need to go back and pry it away with the help of paint scraper.
  3. Apply The Wood Filler: Now, put a wood filler to a putty knife and apply a thin layer of filler across the damaged area. You need to be sure that the wood filler extends, to a small degree, beyond the perimeter of the damaged area. This excess wood filler will ultimately be sanded away. Remember to flex the putty knife in order to produce a flat surface. Do not put or spread the wood filler thickly, due to the fact that this will only be more material for you to sand away. Spread only enough to cover the damaged section, & just a bit higher.
  4. Allow The Wood Filler To Dry: Allow the wood filler to dry in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. This usually takes 45 minutes to one hour, however, it is better to give it at least two hours to dry fully. If you try to sand before it has completely dried, then the filler will get scraped off when you sand. Water-based wood filler will dry faster when compared to oil-based wood filler.
  5. Sand Down The Wood Filler: Secure or fix a fine-grit paper on the oscillating sander, before grinding down the patched area as long as it is flush and smooth with the surrounding paint. Keep away from sanding down all the way to bare wood.
  6. Check For Smoothness: Move a bare hand smoothly over the patched area in order to feel for smoothness. The patched area should mix in with the surrounding paint. If you are not able to smooth the area entirely, such as when the board is badly damaged, then the best option is to replace the board entirely. If the wood filler is not flush with the adjoining wood, repeat the earlier steps.
  7. Apply The Primer: As soon as you are fully satisfied with the smoothness of the filled area, put or spread a primer to the entire surface in order to prepare it for painting. Priming the entire surface will help the filled area mix in perfectly when you apply paint. If you do not prime, the patched area may soak up paint at a different rate than the adjoining area.
