Waterproofing is a method of making any object or for that matter wood water-resistant, that means if your wooden material gets some amount of water drops it will not get affected in any way. So due to the waterproofing nature of the wooden material, it can be used in a wet environment as well.

Steps And Items Needed To Waterproof Your Wooden Countertop

The wooden countertop easily provides an elegant design touch to your kitchen, so it's important to waterproof your wooden countertop in order to protect and maintain it's beauty. If you want to waterproof your wooden countertops by yourself, then you just need to collect the given items and follow the given steps. Here is the list of useful items and steps for this process:

  • Painter's Tack Cloth
  • Rubber Gloves
  • Raw Linseed Oil
  • Lint-Free Cotton Cloth
  • Carnauba Wax

Steps

After collecting all the useful items, now you need to follow all the given steps carefully:
  1. Wipe: First of all, you need to wipe the top surface & edges of your countertop with the help of cloth to collect any dust or food particles preceding to applying the oil finish.
  2. Rubber Gloves: Wear the rubber gloves which are suitable for kitchen cleaning.
  3. Pour: Now you need to take clean, lint-free cotton cloth and then you have to pour a generous amount of linseed oil on it. You can easily buy this linseed oil on every grocery, health-food stores, drugstores, as well as retail paint outlets. You need to use an old t-shirt or household rag or the painter's wiping cloth(available in home centers, paint stores, and hardware stores) that is also best for this type of work.
  4. Rub: After taking the suitable cloth, now rub this linseed oil into the wood countertop while moving cloth according to the direction of the wood grain. Be sure that the cloth is comprehensively soaked with the linseed oil as it is rubbed into the wooden countertop until the whole top & edge surfaces have been soaked. Wipe off any remaining oil that has pooled on the surface of the countertop.
  5. Wait: Now wait nearly for about 2-3 hours and then repeat steps three & four. Allow the 2nd coat at least for 2 hours to dry and then repeat steps 3-4 again.
  6. Apply: Finally you need to apply preservation coat of linseed oil every 4 weeks. A casually used wooden countertop may only need to be touched up in every 6 to 8 weeks, the linseed oil adds water resistance & hardness, splash a few drops of water onto the surface of your wooden countertop, if the water fails to bead up easily, then the wooden countertop is no longer waterproof.
