Types Of Upholstery Corners: Common & Popular Upholstery Techniques For Corners

Common & Popular Upholstery Techniques For Corners

Upholstering is a process of imparting padding, webbing, and fabric cover to the furniture items, mostly to the seats. If you have to perform upholstery on the shapes like square and rectangle, then it is a very easy process. But when it comes to upholstering corners, it is not going to be that easy. Corners can be handled in various ways that mostly depends on the thickness of the material you are using. When you use thick upholstery like leather or vinyl, then it will give good results in the form of thick corners. Some of the common & popular upholstery techniques for corners are mentioned below:

Key To Corner Control

First of all, users need to keep an eye on the straight areas in order to make sure that the corners finish up being consistent & equally proportioned, irrespective of the stapling & folding methods used for upholstery. Fold one side over the bottom or back edge of the upholstery material that is being used. Then staple the whole area, alongside the corners but make sure to stop at least 2 inches away from each corner. After that, fold & staple the opposite sides, the same way as you did earlier, followed by other remaining sides. Next, you have to tackle corners one after another & make sure not to do it one at a time as you work around the piece.

Gift-Wrap Corners

A simple technique that is very easy to understand is to fold the corners in a gift wrap style, in the same way as wrapping a package. The method to perform this is to stick underneath the flaps of the corner smoothly at near about 45-degree angle in order to make it look consistent with two angled corners. Fold & staple the flap on numerous occasions in order to make it secure & repeat the same folding process on the other side, stapling it in the same way.

Angled Ear Approach

If thicker fabrics are folded, which in turn means, it is not easy to staple, then a unique method is to originate clean & neat edges of the corners. At the bottom of each side of one corner, try to smoothen the fabric, compressing the additional fabric in order to make an ear or flap shape. At near about 45-degree angle to the corner, this ear should be stapled along each side, in order to make an additional fabric stake straight up with a clean line of staples along either side of it. By taking the help of scissors or utility knife, trim the adhered fabric and making it as clean as possible.

Trim Time

After performing the stapling process of all the corners according to your own liking, there may still be some of the additional fabric pieces left when you start looking from the side or underneath of the upholstery. In order to solve this issue and make it less bulky, trim this additional fabric, using scissors or utility knife. Make sure to cut the additional fabric in a straight line and for that you first draw a straight line, using a pencil and then cut according to that drawn line.
