Proper Procedure To Spray Paint Cabinets With Airless Sprayer

An airless sprayer is regarded as one of the versatile tool for a variety of painting projects, with the speed which it can spray & the fact that it is owned by almost all painters, it can be an exceptional tool. The best airless sprayer is HVLP, which stands for High Volume Low Pressure in which high volume refers to the product whereas low pressure refers to air. HVLP is a type of spray gun that is designed to beat particles better than traditionally used spray guns. HVLP sprayer has been recommended by many experts to be used for spray painting cabinets. The steps to spray paint cabinets with HVLP sprayer are as follows:
  1. Attach Paint Tip To HVLP Sprayer: Firstly, attach paint tip to HVLP sprayer. You need to unscrew and remove the large wing nut including collar located at the end of the sprayer. After that, retract the needle by pulling the trigger of the sprayer. Once the needle is retracted, pull the tip of the sprayer out. The tip of the sprayer will be similar to the mushroom having threads at the bottom and a pointed tip. Then, insert a 1.55 mm paint tip over the pointed tip followed by replacing the wing nut along with the collar.
  2. Fill The Tank With Paint And Connect Air Hose: Now, fill the tank of HVLP sprayer with paint for which you need to unscrew and remove the tank top on the sprayer. Once the tank is filled with paint, screw the tank top back to the sprayer. After that, connect the air hose to the sprayer. The air hose has to be connected at the bottom of the handle. The air compressor pressure needs to be set at 60 psi.
  3. Test The Sprayer: Next, test the sprayer on a piece of the cupboard. In order to reduce the air pressure, you need to turn the knob located opposite to dial indicator at the bottom of the sprayer clockwise. Similarly, in order to increase the air pressure, turn the same knob anti-clockwise. It has been recommended to set the air pressure that comes out of the sprayer between 15-20 psi. In order to decrease the paint volume coming out of the sprayer, turn the knob located opposite to the trigger on the handle clockwise and to increase the paint volume, turn the same knob anti-clockwise. Apart from that, to decrease the pattern, you need to turn the knob located above the volume knob clockwise and to increase the pattern, turn the same knob anti-clockwise. It has been recommended by the experts that when the sprayer sprays an 8-inch wide pattern from about 16-inch distance, without runs or drips, the volume and pattern is perfect.
  4. Remove Drawers & Doors: The next step will be to remove drawers and doors of the cabinets. It has been recommended to place them across sawhorses with doors facing down.
  5. Spray Paint Drawers, Doors & Cabinets: Now, spray paint the drawers & cabinets inside out. It has been recommended to spray paint the inside of the cabinets by holding the sprayer 16 inches away in patterns that overlap each other by minimum 1 inch. The face frame of the cabinets should be spray painted starting from the vertical sides, then horizontal sides, and at last the sides of the cabinets. Similarly, spray paint the face sides and ends of the doors and drawers as well. Once everything is painted, wait as long as the paint dries.
  6. Sand And Paint Again: Once the paint dries, you need to sand everything lightly using 180-grit sandpaper followed by spraying the second coat of paint similar to the first coat. The two coats of paint will be enough for the drawers & cabinets. The faces and sides of the doors require a third coat of spray paint for which the user needs to lightly sand over the dried second coat of paint using 180-grit sandpaper.
  7. Reattach The Doors & Drawers: Once the two coats of paint dry on the drawers & cabinets and three coats of paint dry on the doors, reattach doors & drawers back to the cabinets before putting the cabinets to use again.
