  • Paintbrushes,Chemical Stripper And Stripping Tool
  • Wax And Polish Remover And Fine Steel Wool (0000 Gauge)
  • Fine Glass paper And Sanding Block
  • Wood Dye, Finishing Oil
  • Wax Polish And Tack Cloth

Steps

  1. Prepare: Start work outside if possible. If you are working inside then you need to protect the floors and any other furniture nearby and ensure the presence of good ventilation. To prevent damaging the finish on the body of the furniture, use plastic sheet in order to cover it, so that only the top of your furniture is exposed. Apply stripper liberally by using an old paintbrush.
  2. Dissolve: After applying the stripper, leave it for nearly 5 to 30 minutes to completely dissolve a mix of old varnish and polish. If you did not get the best result then again apply stripper.
  3. Neutralize: Neutralize the furniture with a pad of steel wool soaked in proprietary wax, white spirit, and polish remover, by following the grain of the furniture. If you are using any chemical then always read the label before starting the process because different strippers require different neutralizers.
  4. Clean Off: Wipe away the residues with clean cotton rags and leave it for 24 hours. Clean away dirt and old polish by applying wax remover on a steel wool pad or coarse cloth and work in small areas at a time. Leave it for nearly 15-20 minutes to soften the wax on your furniture and before it solidifies wipe away with a clean cloth.
  5. Table Top: One day after stripping the furniture top, use glasspaper (fine) or sanding block to smooth wood fibers raised during the stripping process and always work with the grain. Vacuum and shake the protective sheet to get rid of dust which can spoil the finished piece. Finally, wipe the furniture top with a tack cloth.
  6. Wood Dye: For many years your antique furniture was sited beneath a window and the sun has bleached some part of your antique wood furniture. Apply plenty of mahogany wood dye on your old furniture using a paintbrush. Wipe away any excess dye with an old cloth. Work in good light to ensure an even finish.
  7. Finishing Oil: Once dry, apply finishing oil (one coat) using a brush or lint-free cloth. Allow the oil to sit for at least 10 minutes and wipe away the oil before it goes sticky. Wait for at least 5-6 hours and gently rub with steel wool (0000 gauges) before applying another coat, repeat again to get the greater durability and sheen.
  8. Wax: Finally, sparingly apply a thin coat of good furniture wax over the whole furniture. Leave for 1 hour at least and polish it with a lint-free cloth. Sunlight will bleach your wood, so ensure it’s not placed beneath a window.
