4 Easy Methods To Restore Faded Fiberglass Door

Are you worried about your faded fiberglass door and you want to restore it in the old condition then don't worry because here are the 4 easy methods to restore your faded fiberglass door. Simply read and follow the given methods to finish this task without wasting your precious time. Here is the list of all the 4 methods:

Method 1: Cleaning

Before painting or staining the surface of your faded fiberglass door you need to clean the door properly. If you fail to clean your door then it will prevent your stain or paint from binding to the door surface and will also lower the lifespan of the door. If you want to prepare the door surface then you need to apply a non-sudsing cleaner on the surface of your door with the help of a sponge. After getting rid of any loose particles, next, dry off your door by using you the clean rag.

Method 2: Refinishing

  • If you see that there is any excessive fading on the door surface then you have to completely refinish the fiberglass door. In order to remove the old & faded finish, you need to apply a thin layer of a water-based stripper and allow it to dry for at least one complete hour before following further steps.
  • After one hour is complete, now you again need to apply subsequent layers of your water-based stripper, repeat this step until you see that the finish begins to loosen and then you have to scrape it off with the help of a putty knife. If the fiberglass door surface is uneven then you need to gently sand the door surface with the help of 120-grit sandpaper.
  • Always remember that do not sand your door extremely to avert releasing any fiberglass particles into the air. Once you've removed the entire finish, now you need to clean the whole surface of your door by using a rag soaked in alcohol(denatured). You also need to use a paintbrush(natural bristled) for applying a layer of gel stain.
  • The gel stain is the most important element of protecting your fiberglass door from fading. When you see that the applied gel stain dries then you need to apply at least two more layers of fiberglass topcoat, you have to wait for it to dry betwixt each applied coats.

Method 3: Using Acrylics

You also need to know that the exterior acrylics are more resistant to UV light (ultraviolet) as we compare it to many other paints and the acrylics paints are also designed to withstand the poor weather condition, and this paint is perfect for your fiberglass doors. Because of the long lifespan of the paint, the acrylics paints are also used for painting the road signs. You can easily apply the exterior acrylics paint over gel stain but you must prime the fiberglass door surface first. Here are the steps to do this:
  1. First of all, you need to use a roller to apply at least two coats of your exterior acrylic primer to your fiberglass door.
  2. When the primer is dry, now you need to use your natural bristled paintbrush to apply the exterior acrylics paint over the applied primer on your door.
  3. You also need to know that the dark colors will also absorb more heat and will cause the warping issue.

Method 4: Patching

The gel stain is a thick substance and it will not flow when you apply it to the fiberglass door. As the acrylic paint, the gel stains can be also used to touch up any faded areas of the fiberglass door. You need to use a small, natural bristled paintbrush to apply the gel stain or the paint. Use the type of color that matches your fiberglass door as exactly as possible. Because fading is generally utterly subtle, you will presumably only need one thin layer because it can dry in a different color to how it looks when wet, so you need to wait before applying the second or third coat.
