Items List For This Process

  • Reciprocating Saw & Hammer
  • Wire Brush & Landing Post
  • Measuring Tape & Staircase Railing
  • Drill & Countersink
  • Newel Posts & 3-Inch Bolts
  • 2-Inch Wood Dowels & Wood
  • Fine-Grit Sandpaper

Steps For This Process

  • First of all, you need to locate the screws which are holding your wrought-iron railing to your stairs. The iron railing will have screws at the base of its spindles or the newel posts where your posts meet your stairs. Unscrew each one & then unscrew the screws at the top of your stairs. Lift your railing up & remove it from your stairs. If you remove your iron railing from a material like cement or stone, cut your iron railing off where it meets your wall. Scrub your metal on your wall with the help of wire brush until it feels smooth.
  • Measure the distance from the bottom of your stairs to the top of your stairs. Divide that measurement by 4, which gives you the number of newel posts needed. Space your newel posts 4 inches apart on your stairs. For example, if your stairway measures 120 inches\10 feet long then you will need 30 newel posts.
  • Next, you need to drill 1-inch holes into your flooring every 4 inches across the stairs where you want to install your banister. Now, drill 1-inch holes into the bottom of your every newel post. Apply wood glue to the bottom of a 2-inch wood dowel & then insert it into your stairway holes.
  • Set one of your new newel posts on top of your dowel, lining up your hole on the post with your dowel. Press down & gently tap the top of your post with the help of a hammer until it sits flush with your stairs. Repeat this step with each of your newel post.
  • Next you need to turn your landing post upside down & drill 6 one-inch deep holes across the bottom. Drill 6 matching holes at the bottom of your stairs. Now you need to apply glue to your holes in your floor & insert wood dowels. Apply glue to your top of each dowel & set the landing post on top. Press down until your post sits flush on your floor.
  • Place your staircase railing cut to fit the stairway on top of your newel posts & landing post. Drill a hole through with the top of your iron railing & into each post with your countersink bit. The hole should be marginally deeper than the length of the bolts. Now you need to slide your 3-inch bolt through with the first post & tighten your bolt. Repeat this step with each post. When properly tightened, your bolt should be slenderly lower than the surface of your iron railing.
  • Cover the top of your every bolt with the help of wood putty and then let it dry for overnight. Sand the area by using sandpaper(fine-grit) and remove the extra putty. The putty will easily cover your every bolt, making them blend into your railing.
