6 Steps And Items Needed To Repair Screw Holes In Hollow Door

If you have holes, dents and damages on your hollow door then you can easily fix them by collecting the required items and then following all the given steps. Here are the 6 easy steps and items needed to repair holes in you hollow door:

Items List And Steps For This Process

Utility knife & Rag
Sandpaper & Mineral Spirits
Non expanding Spray Foam Insulation
Wood Filler & Putty Knife
After collecting all the mentioned items, you need to follow the given steps to fix this issue:
  1. First of all you need to remove jagged, loose edges & splinters by using your sharp utility knife & sandpaper. Dust off the area that is surrounding the hole.
  2. Apply spray foam insulation (non-expanding, small amount) to your hole. You have to fill the hole entirely and allow it to dry for hours. This foam will create a solid base in order to support the wood filler, this will help you in other steps.
  3. Now, you need to get rid of a thin layer of applied spray foam using your utility knife. This idea is used to create a cavity (small) inside of the hole to support the wood filler.
  4. Apply an voluminous amount of the wood filler to the hole by using the putty knife. Overfill the hole with enough material to raise the repair slenderly higher than the hollow door surface. You need to allow the applied wood filler to dry entirely.
  5. Once dried completely, sand the repair wood filler with sandpaper (100-grit) until the repair is flush with your hollow door surface. For a smoother finish then you can also sand the repair once more but this time with 200-grit sandpaper.
  6. Clean the hollow surface with a rag & mineral spirits to remove any dust particle. Paint or stain your door to conceal the repair.

Tips & Warning

  • Tip: You can also use an body filler(automotive) to repair your hollow doors that are painted. The two-part filler dries exceedingly fast & also provides a strong & solid repair.
  • Warning: Do not use expanding spray foam insulation on your hollow. The material expands at it dries. This can cause your door to swell.
