Repair Hole In Solid Wood Door: 3 Methods And Items Needed

3 Methods And Items Needed To Fix A Hole In A Solid Wooden Door

Wood doors are aesthetically pleasing and typically sturdy. However, when a wooden door gets a deep scratch or significant hole in its panels, it can not only look bad but also cause structural damage over time. You can quickly and easily repair screw holes in a hollow door or patch a hole in a solid wood door in just a few hours of work.

Items Needed

  • Hammer & Handsaw
  • 120-Grit Sandpaper & Scrap Wood
  • C-Clamps & Paint Scraper
  • Drywall knife & Utility knife
  • Artist’s Paintbrush & Carpenter’s Glue
  • Wood Primer & Paint
  • Epoxy Wood Filler
  • Drywall Joint Compound
  • Spray Foam Insulation
  • Paint Pigment To Match The Wood

Method 1: Repair Holes In Hollow-Core Doors

  • First you need to place a piece of solid wood over one side of the hole on your wooden door.
  • On the other side of the door hole, spray foam insulation into the cavity and then let the foam insulation expand until it's bulging out from the hole of your wooden. It has filled the blank and will offer more support once you have completed the repair process.
  • Next, you need to use a utility knife to shave the foam insulation on both sides of your door. Create a slenderly concave surface on the hardened foam insulation & cover it with a coat of drywall joint compound.
  • Now, scrape drywall joint compound so that it's flush with the rest of your wooden door. Take sandpaper(120 grit)
and sand the dried drywall compound slowly.
  • Finally, Prime & paint the patch in the wood door. Tint the primer to the shade of your wood door & work in circular motions, start from the center of the patch and end to the edges of the existing wood panel.

Method 2: Repair Drill Holes

To repair screw holes in a hollow door or solid wood door is fairly simple. Small round holes in wood doors that are left behind from lock changes or other hardware can be quickly fixed with a dowel.
  • The first step is to find a dowel that's the diameter of the hole of your door and cut it to fit. It should stick out about one inch from either side of your door.
  • Next, coat the dowel by using a carpenter’s glue & gently tap the dowel into the drill hole with the help of a hammer. Once one end is flush with the surface of your door, let the glue dry for a few hours.
  • Now you need to use a hacksaw to cut the other end of your dowel off & then sand down any rough areas with medium-grit sandpaper.
  • Repeat as necessary for all holes of your wooden door.
  • Prime or paint the patched area, or your entire door, to complete the project.

Method 3: Repair Irregular Holes On Solid Doors

Irregular or rather large holes require a bit more effort but can save the door from having to be completely replaced. To repair a hole in a solid wood door, you'll basically follow the same instructions as a hollow door but with different materials.
  • First you need to use C-clamps to hold a piece of wood to one side of your door to support the filling material.
  • Fill irregular or large holes with the help of epoxy wood filler mixed with hardener. Trowel it into the hole of your door for a smooth surface.
  • Your next step is to leave the patch with a slightly concave center and then let it dry for 1-2 hours .
  • Once your filler has hardened, remove the C-clamp and the wood on another side of your door. Coat the patch with the help of drywall joint compound on both sides of the exposed patch area.
  • Once the drywall joint compound has dried completely, now you can prime or paint the patch.
