Methods To Refinish Hardwood Floors Without Sanding Opt

Sanding is the most effective way of refinishing hardwood floors but it can get very much exhausting as well. In order to refinish hardwood floors without sanding opt, the user can follow any of the two below given methods:

Buffing Method

In this refinishing method, the user will buff the hardwood floor instead of sanding by following the below-given steps:
  1. Clear & Clean The Floor:
    First, the user needs to remove everything placed on the flooring. Then, the user needs to vacuum or sweep the flooring in order to remove debris or dirt present on it. If there is anything stuck on the flooring, the user needs to scrape it off as well.
  2. Buff The Floor:
    The next step will be to buff the floor with an electronic buffer. It has been recommended by the experts to attach fine-grit mesh screen to the buffer while buffing light wear areas whereas more damaged areas need to be buffed with a medium-grit mesh screen. The user needs to run the buffer in a straight line and also in the direction of the wood grain. If required, the user can remove and flip the mesh during the step as well.
  3. Manual Buffing:
    The user can manually buff the areas where an electronic buffer cannot reach such as against the walls and in the corners. In order to buff such areas, the user needs to remove mesh screen from the buffer, fold it into half, and then hand buff the areas.
  4. Vacuum The Floor:
    After buffing, the user needs to vacuum the entire hardwood floor to remove buffing dust. The remaining dust from the floor can be removed by wiping the floor with a pad soaked with mineral spirits or by using a lint-free cloth.
  5. Apply Clear Coat Or Varnish:
    The last step will be to apply a finishing layer of clear coat or varnish on to the floor by using a paint roller or a paint brush. It has been recommended by the experts to start applying the finish from the farthest end of the floor and work towards the exit. After that, the user needs to let the floor dry completely before putting it to use again.

Chemical Method

In this refinishing method, chemical stain stripper is used to remove the old finish from the floor before applying a new finish on to it. The steps to follow are as under:
  1. Clear & Clean The Floor:
    The first step will be to clear everything from the floor followed by vacuuming or sweeping the floor in order to get rid of dirt or debris from it.
  2. Apply Chemical Stain Stripper:
    In the next step, the user needs to apply a thin and even coat of chemical stain stripper on to the floor by using a paint roller or a paintbrush. It has been recommended to start applying the chemical stain stripper from the farthest end of the floor and work towards the exit.
  3. Scrape The Floor:
    The user needs to allow the chemical stain stripper to sit on the floor for 2-3 hours before scraping the floor with a scraper. The step helps in removing the old finish from the hardwood floor and it has been recommended to scrape the floor in the direction of the wood grain.
  4. Apply Stain Or Varnish:
    Before applying an even coat of stain or varnish on to the hardwood floor, it is necessary to let the floor dry overnight. If required, the user can apply a second coat of varnish or stain as well. Once the floor is evenly coated, the user needs to let it dry completely before putting it to use again.
